Amoako Boafo Brings a Slice of Accra to Gagosian London in ‘I Do Not Come to You by Chance’

The artistic journey of Amoako Boafo from Ghana has been nothing less than dazzling. In the year 2021, his artworks were sent into space, a significant milestone for both the artist and the realm of African contemporary art. This was followed by Kim Jones commissioning him to design visuals for Dior’s Summer 2021 campaign. Later in the same year, Larry Gagosian, a renowned art dealer, referred to him as the “pioneer of portraiture’s future.

Currently, the well-known artist is showcasing his first UK solo exhibition titled “I Do Not Come to You by Chance” at Gagosian London. This event is a testament to his roots in Accra and honors the artistic milieu that played a significant role in his extraordinary ascent. Spanning three rooms, this exhibition presents a fresh collection of works, meticulously painted with his fingertips – vibrant depictions of Black joy that challenge stereotypes by offering heartfelt portrayals of “affection, camaraderie, and self-empowerment.

In this exhibition, we see a harmonious blend of art and architecture. It’s here where the artist unveils their initial double-faced, freestanding painting – a unique creation featuring two life-sized female figures standing back-to-back on collapsible wooden panels. This artwork reinterprets the Adinkra symbol nkyinkyim, symbolizing the ups and downs of life, and reflecting the tenacity and endurance shown by the characters as they journey through a challenging social landscape.

In a recent comment, the artist expressed that their artwork serves as a platform for them to honor their roots and their aspirations, as well as offering distinctive viewpoints and insights.

The central focus of this presentation is a replica of the courtyard from the artist’s childhood home, which served as his initial canvas. This creation, made in partnership with designer Glenn DeRoche, who was involved in Boafo’s dot.ateliers artist residency program, merges personal tales with the vibrant energy of collaborative imagination. It is a space where families and artists gather to exchange thoughts, resources, and inspirations.

I Do Not Come to You by Chance is now on view through May 24.
