All the gameplay updates coming to League of Legends on Season 2: Atakhan, anti-lane swaps, death screen, and more
Every fresh season signals substantial changes, and League of Legends follows suit. Let’s explore the new features arriving with Patch Note 25.09.
As a fresh season begins and exciting gameplay adjustments approach, Riot Games has addressed player suggestions from the previous season by unveiling significant modifications to the mechanics and general playstyle of League of Legends. So, let’s dive straight in!
Atakhan
In League of Legends, there’s a significant gameplay update coming up featuring a character named Atakhan. Similar to the cinematic “Dark Gambit”, Atakhan will initially be held captive by The Black Rose clan. But in Season 2, you can recognize him as Thornbound. Throughout the game, the objective will appear on both the top and bottom sides of the map, rotating based on which side has the most player-versus-player action.
Slaying Thornbound Atakhan will bring forth a fresh reward: the group who defeats Atakhan instantly acquires any leftover Bloody Roses scattered across the map, in addition to a bonus, and then all their Bloody Petals are transformed into Spirit Petals, enhancing their effects by 25%. Furthermore, they receive a Spiritual Purification boost. This means that when they perform a takedown, they sanctify the area, slowing and harming other adversaries while bestowing their team with a Spirit Petal.
Void Grubs and Herald
As reported by the creators, the occurrence and intensity of encounters with epic monsters in League of Legends is excessive, hindering optimal game speed, lane dynamics, and match-to-match diversity. In order to enhance the overall gaming experience, significant adjustments are being made to League of Legends.
- Second Void Grubs spawn removed;
- The first spawn happens later in the game;
- Maximum Grub count to three instead of six;
- Rift Herald’ spawn time moved to 15 minutes.
In the upcoming update, the Rift Herald will be less durable, as Riot Games is eliminating Shelly’s Gaze – the effect that lowered damage against her. However, this change means the Herald will inflict more damage on players instead. The intention behind this adjustment is to facilitate quicker, simpler interactions, particularly for solo players, while maintaining the Herald as a significant and risky target.
Bounty changes
In the upcoming season, bonuses from bounties will only award extra gold if you’re definitively part of the victorious team. This will be determined by examining your gold earnings, experience points, and completion of objectives.
As a 5/0 Orianna on a losing team, my opponents aren’t just holding their own against me, they’re practically set to take down my shutdown gold in upcoming team fights, making any comeback as Orianna that much harder. Starting from the next patch, I won’t be worth anymore than the standard kill gold unless my team is decisively ahead.
The mechanism of level-based gold scaling provides a gentle, non-disruptive method to prevent snowballing in the game. Initially, it starts at 250 gold, gradually increasing up to 400 gold instead of the usual 300. The accumulation of bounties will be postponed until after leaving combat, and suppression will realign all bounties each time team leads are recalculated.
Role Swapping and Position Binding
In the upcoming changes for League of Legends, there’ll be an adjustment to role assignments. Currently, players can choose to play support while also using the jungle item and roaming freely. However, starting from next season, this won’t be possible as the jungle role will come with the Smite spell, and only one Smite per team will be available. For those who use the Spellbook rune, there are no changes. Similarly, supports will be automatically equipped with the World Atlas item in the new season.
Anti-lane Swap
The rules against swapping lanes during League of Legends games will become stricter to prevent such actions in both competitive and standard matches. If a World Atlas (a specific item) is spotted in either mid or top lane between minutes 1:35 and 2:15, or 1:35 and 3:00, the system will identify it as a lane swap. In such cases, the penalties will be solely imposed on the supporting player.
Rather than decreasing every player’s minion earnings (gold and XP) by 25%, the support will now be unable to convert their World Atlas stacks, thus they won’t gain any gold or experience from minions in the lane. However, the detection rule remains: at least two non-junglers must be present in the lane for it to function.
Death screen and kill streaks
Are you tired of the monotonous grey display? Get ready for some vibrancy next season! The shade won’t just lighten a tad; the death screen itself will undergo a transformation. Now, during your respawn time, you can observe a teammate and witness some less-than-impressive moves they might make. This feature doesn’t alter your gameplay experience, but it certainly adds an entertaining element while you wait for your return.
In line with the excitement of VALORANT, Riot Games plans to enhance League of Legends by incorporating fresh sound effects into kills, aiming to make its most thrilling moments even more exhilarating. These effects are designed to be heard only by you. For multiple kills, the sounds will escalate progressively, functioning as your personal cheer squad to boost your morale.
When will these updates be available in League of Legends?
In Patch Note 25.09, due out on April 30th, you’ll find all the updates regarding gameplay and system modifications. We eagerly anticipate starting the upcoming Spirit Blossom season with everyone!
