Basic Attack

Has the user hurl ice, applying a slowing effect and dealing damage to opposing Pokémon.

Passive – Snow Cloak

For a short time after using a move, Pokémon become covered in frost, which helps them withstand more damage. If the move creates snow around the Pokémon, it becomes even more protected and the frost lasts longer.

Moves like Icy Wind, Blizzard, and Ice Wing have a chance to freeze opposing Pokémon. Each time these moves hit, they add to a ‘freeze counter’. If the counter reaches zero, the Pokémon becomes frozen.

Ability 1 – Icy Wind

Articuno sends out a blast of icy air, damaging opponents and creating a brief snowfall that freezes the ground.

Ability Choice at Level 5

At Level 5, Articuno will be able to use the following ability:

Blizzard

This move creates a powerful blizzard around you, potentially freezing opposing Pokémon. Each hit from the blizzard applies a ‘freeze counter,’ and if a Pokémon is hit five times, it becomes frozen solid.

Upgrade: Increases the number of freeze counters applied to opposing Pokémon to 2.

Ability 2 – Ice Shard

This move makes the user throw a chunk of ice at the opponent, damaging any Pokémon it hits. If the target is already affected by a freeze-inducing move, it will instantly become frozen. And if the target is already frozen, the ice will shatter, dealing even more damage.

Ability Choice at Level 7

At Level 7, Articuno will be able to use the following ability:

Ice Beam

This move lets the user fire a blast of freezing energy at an opponent, causing damage. If the opponent is already weakened by cold (has a ‘freeze counter’), they’ll become frozen solid. And if the attack hits a frozen Pokémon, the ice will break, dealing even more damage.

Upgrade: Increases the duration this move leaves opposing Pokémon frozen

Unite Move – Ice Wing Whiteout

This move creates a powerful blizzard around you, damaging nearby opposing Pokémon. If the blizzard initially hits a frozen opponent, the ice will shatter, causing even more damage.

If this attack lands in one of your team’s goal zones, that zone will become frozen, preventing the opposing team from scoring there. The ice will melt once the opposing team deals enough damage to the frozen zone.

Early Game

When playing Articuno, it’s best to go to either the Top or Bottom Lane. This will help you effectively protect your teammates. Early in the game, concentrate on safely earning experience and gold, and use Articuno’s abilities to slow down opposing players in your lane.

Use Icy Wind to disrupt wild Pokémon and limit their movement by freezing the ground. Then, finish them off with Ice Shard, which will freeze opponents who are already slowed down.

Articuno’s ability, Snow Cloak, makes it tougher to damage after using a move, so try to use your abilities to safely attack opponents while staying durable. Stick with your teammate to help them and prevent them from getting too far ahead. Focus on reaching Level 5 quickly so you can use your stronger abilities to control team fights more effectively.

Mid and Late Game

When you reach Level 5, Icy Wind evolves into Blizzard, and at Level 7, Ice Shard becomes Ice Beam, creating a powerful combination. This combo is all about freezing and controlling groups of enemies in battle. Begin by using Blizzard to gradually freeze several enemies nearby. Once they’ve been frozen enough, finish them off with Ice Beam to instantly freeze them solid and inflict additional damage.

Okay, so this combo is amazing when you’re fighting with your team in close quarters, especially when trying to take or hold important stuff like Goal Zones, Groudon, or Regieleki. And Articuno’s Unite Move – Ice Wing Whiteout – seriously changes the game later on. It does a ton of damage in an area, and if you can freeze enemies first, the damage ramps up even more! Plus, you can even freeze the enemy Goal Zone with it, which is a lifesaver when they’re trying to score at the very end of the match.

Focus on placing Articuno near important, contested objectives. Its freezing and slowing abilities can really disrupt the enemy team. Work with your faster teammates and damage dealers to capitalize on those disruptions – they can quickly move in and finish off enemies that Articuno controls.
