Fragrance and Furniture Collided at the Marc-Antoine Barrois Installation

2021 saw Milan Design Week brimming with numerous immersive experiences, featuring installations equipped with multi-sensory components that offered temporary refuge from the bustling city streets to its attendees.

Among them, one stood out, situated within the City Textile Hall, demonstrated the technique flawlessly – a collaboration between a perfumer and designer, resulting in an immersive encounter that seamlessly intertwined aroma with furniture design.

For the first time at Milan Design Week, Marc-Antoine Barrois teamed up with French artist and designer Antoine Bouillot. Their collaboration aimed to instill a feeling of hopefulness within its spectators. The event mainly focused on the unveiling of a new perfume called “Aldebarn”. This unique fragrance is derived from tuberose, also known as the “flower of the night”.

At Milan Design Week for the first time, Marc-Antoine Barrois and French artist and designer Antoine Bouillot joined forces. Their objective was to evoke a sense of positivity among visitors. The main highlight of the event was the introduction of a new perfume called “Aldebarn”, made from tuberose, often referred to as “the flower of the night”.

The aroma’s constituents, like the tuberose and its name inspired by the large red celestial body Al-Debaran, served as the basis for creating the “Mission Aldebaran” exhibit.

Stepping inside, I found myself enclosed within a gleaming cube adorned with a lush canopy of ropes. From this dimly-lit chamber, I emerged into a radiant expanse bathed in the soft glow of an enormous star. This celestial body illuminated delicate paper flowers that filled the air with the enticing fragrance of tuberose infused with Aldebarn.

From the time I began studying fine arts at age 6, I’ve identified myself as an artist. Surrounded by contemporary art, I’ve always envisioned creating something unique that would evoke fresh emotions. Speaking with TopMob, Barrios shared his reason for choosing to manifest fragrance in a tangible form.

In another location, the initial collaboration between Barrois and Bouillot on furniture design was revealed for the first time. Their inspiration came from the pebbles found along the shores of Belle-Île. This special edition seating collection features wooden chairs and stools that are adorned with sculptural stones reminiscent of these beach pebbles.

Barrois expressed his passion for design and architecture when they hold meaning, stating that such creations are like works of art for living. He found Milan Design Week particularly fitting as it provided a platform for presenting furniture pieces. For him, this event offers one of the best opportunities to celebrate design and interact with an intriguing audience by setting up an engaging installation.

Bouillot mentioned that every item designed for the event was meticulously thought out to encapsulate and express the deep feelings Marc-Antoine and he had when creating this fragrance. Each piece carries its unique narrative, infused with significance.

The Mission Aldebarn was carried out during the recently concluded Milan Design Week that happened last month, wrapping up on the 13th of April.
