The Missed Opportunity – T3 Arena: From a promising launch to a Bot-filled battleground

Story Highlights

  • Too long matchmaking, bot-filled servers, and a lack of active players made ranked mode frustrating.
  • Little care was provided by the developers from the very beginning; the game struggled a lot with cheaters.
  • The lack of promotion for updates, seasons, heroes, and events lowered player interest and engagement.

The game called T3 Arena, developed by XD Inc, is a swift-moving multiplayer shooter for mobile devices. It boasts an impressive array of heroes to choose from and integrates thrilling action elements. This game initially became available in its Early Access phase in March 2022 and was later rolled out worldwide.

Initially, there was high expectation for T3 Arena to be the mobile equivalent of Overwatch, a popular shooter title. In our review of T3 Arena, we highlighted its strong points and gave it constructive feedback. Unfortunately, the game’s initial appeal quickly faded as it encountered numerous problems, leading to its disappointing performance. As a result, T3 Arena found itself in our “missed opportunities” section, where we examine the decline of a game and suggest ways it could have been improved.

Featured Column – The Missed Opportunity

Have you ever played a game where you thought, “Uh-oh, what a squandered chance!”? GamingonPhone’s column titled “The Missed Opportunity” dives into similar sentiments, examining missed chances in gameplay, design, or marketing that could have significantly improved these mobile games. Each article delves into the reasons for failure and suggests possible improvements.

T3 Arena offers a ranked mode without any players

It’s amusing yet accurate to say that the game is struggling a bit to keep its matchmaking system running seamlessly due to a smaller player base. In fact, it’s not uncommon for some fresh players to swiftly advance through the ranks, leading to the suspicion that the servers are populated with bot opponents.

As a seasoned gamer, I can confidently say that I’ve been there myself. Back when the game first dropped, I was one of the first to dive in and give it a spin. I clocked up quite a few hours, leaving me utterly astounded by its initial charm. However, over time, the game seemed to fade into obscurity, piquing my curiosity about its current status. So, I decided to revisit the past and install it anew, and lo and behold, everything I’d heard was spot on!

However, an intriguing aspect of this game is that the ranked mode often fails to provide opponents for higher-ranked battles. This occurs due to a lack of players, resulting in long wait times such as 45 minutes for one match and even entire days without any matches at all.

In different parts of the world, there were noticeable delays in gameplay, which is problematic for a globally accessible title like ours since it requires servers to connect players and maintain consistent response times. This is crucial for maintaining fair competition. Unfortunately, once more, the game did not deliver on this aspect effectively.

One significant issue with the game was failing to adequately inform players about upcoming features such as seasons, characters, sneak previews, trailers, and so on. Unfortunately, these updates were not effectively communicated to the players, which contributed to a decline in the overall player base.

Developers showed negligence with their creation

Since its launch, T3 Arena has encountered numerous issues. Despite moderators in the official communities attempting to argue that the game remains enjoyable, this perspective has been refuted directly by some players. This suggests that the game’s performance was insufficient to capture the necessary player interest for it to thrive.

After several months of its launch, the players found themselves in a muddle due to the game’s Pay-to-Win (P2W) nature. In this setup, upgrading one hero would essentially lock them into that character, with no room for growth for Free-to-Play (F2P) gamers. Unfortunately, the game didn’t provide any benefits for subsequent heroes, making it difficult for players to progress equally when they decided to focus on another hero.

Users argued that some top-tier characters are locked behind a $200 paywall, with some spending even more for overpowered ones. This disparity between Free-to-Play (F2P) and Pay-to-Win (P2W) players became evident. Additionally, concerns were raised about the black rumble boxes, which provided skills and upgrades for heroes.

Some gamers shelled out a significant amount on those containers without receiving any rewards, leading to growing annoyance within the gaming community. Furthermore, initial problems were escalating into major issues, causing players to divert their focus away from the game. Regrettably, the spectator mode was exploited extensively for cheating purposes. In a PvP combat game, this allowed players to observe their opponents live, undermining the core aspects of the mode’s uniqueness.

Issues grasped the title tightly and only upscaled by far

It’s common knowledge that the game had numerous problems, and one major issue was rank boosting. This practice allowed players to participate in tournaments, as they could artificially inflate their ranks. Additionally, there were allegations that some players manipulated the system through methods such as throwing matches or collaborating with opponents, all of which seemed to go unnoticed by the developers.

Despite developers’ efforts to safeguard the matchmaking system through updates, they weren’t successful in curbing cheating. Furthermore, a significant portion of resources was channeled towards esports, leaving regular players with a feeling of dissatisfaction as they sought an enjoyable gaming experience.

More current events have raised questions about the title’s lack of care for its players, as the official Discord server of T3 Arena has fallen victim to hackers. These cybercriminals managed to infiltrate numerous player accounts, giving them access and control over the victims’ personal computers.

Everything transpired as a result of unauthorized access to a moderator’s account, which was then exploited to insert a link requesting users to reverify their accounts. The distress of the community moderators was underscored once more by a user’s remark, expressing that this hacking incident had brought the most thrilling experience to the Discord community thus far!

Due to these issues, the number of players for this game has significantly decreased. It’s not doing well in terms of popularity or earnings, with revenue dropping below $20,000. Remarkably, it remains operational primarily due to its Japanese player base, who currently generate most of its income.

It’s quite astonishing to note that T3 Arena was only pulling in approximately $2 million per month as of August 2023, considering its revenue. However, this prosperity didn’t last long, as a decline followed shortly after. To date, the total earnings have peaked slightly over $15 million.

T3 Arena could be a game-changer, but it missed each opportunity to become one

The game offers two different PvP modes: 3v3 and 5v5. Therefore, it allows you to select the size of your teams according to your preference. This unique decision has the potential to significantly enhance the esports aspect of the game.

Currently, T3 Arena is experiencing a decline as players depart, bots flood the stages, and the scarcity of events, updates, and characters strangles its vitality. The developers’ absence also seems palpable, hinting at their potential departure. While not necessarily an official ending for a game, the actions taken by those responsible often signal it.

Initially designed for 3vs3 matches, then switched to 5vs5, the game failed to consistently excite its fanbase. Factors such as insufficient promotion, resources, attention, updates, and balance issues in ranked mode, hero acquisition, and so on, have led the game into a “dead-end” stage. Regrettably, T3 Arena now stands as a squandered opportunity in the mobile gaming market.
