One fan’s winning bet on an #1 auction just turned out to be a major loss.
According to Bleeding Cool, a Marvel Comics fan recently won an eBay auction for a rare variant cover of Ultimate Endgame #1. The cover featured a sketch of Doctor Doom, and surprisingly, it was drawn by Robert Downey Jr., who is known for playing Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The winning bid of almost $3,500 unfortunately bought the buyer a low-quality fan-made copy of the original sketch art by Robert Downey Jr., which came in blind bag packaging.
The first issue of Ultimate Endgame came out with many different cover variations sold as blind bags. Two of these covers were blank sketch covers featuring drawings of Doctor Doom by an actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These Doctor Doom covers looked like this:
Unsurprisingly, these covers quickly became incredibly popular and valuable. Soon after, the same seller on eBay, cheeseheadcomics, sold a copy of one of these covers, along with over a dozen other comics featuring Doctor Doom, for a little over $3,500.
Turns out the comic book covers were counterfeit, leaving the disappointed fan who spent a lot of money on them with nothing.
The first issue of Ultimate Endgame, released on December 31st by a team including Deniz Camp and Terry & Rachel Dodson, signaled a significant shift in the Ultimate Universe. The story featured Iron Lad and his allies facing powerful new challenges, as the villain known as the Maker broke free after being imprisoned for years.
Two thousand years have passed in the Ultimate Universe, but the Maker has been secretly preparing for his comeback within the City for all that time! Now that the barrier protecting the City is down, heroes across the Ultimate Universe need to team up and stop the Maker before it’s too late—for everyone. At the same time, a full-scale World War III is breaking out across the rest of the world.
What Does the End of the Ultimate Universe Look Like — And When Does It Arrive?
The Ultimate Universe is about to be reimagined by writer Deniz Camp and artists Terry Dodson and Jonas Scharf. This upcoming issue will conclude a story that started over two years ago in Ultimate Invasion #1, when the Maker decided to rebuild Earth-6160 to match his own vision.
During New York Comic-Con 2025, the creators revealed an upcoming story arc that they described as the powerful conclusion to everything writer Jonathan Hickman has been building. They explained that storylines from various books will finally come together in a significant, emotionally charged event, promising major developments and even character deaths. They called it an incredible and impactful moment for the series.
Dan Buckley, the leader of Marvel Comics and its related franchises, explained that this story would be a complete arc – with a clear beginning, middle, and end – that people could enjoy and share for many years.
Ultimate Endgame #1 from Marvel Comics is on sale now.
