Australian Rock Legend Shocks Fans with Devastating Cancer Diagnosis

Midnight Oil drummer Rob Hirst has revealed he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Over the weekend, the legendary Australian rock musician, now 69, revealed the sad news about his condition, explaining that he decided to speak out publicly even though he was diagnosed two years ago.

As a devoted enthusiast, I felt compelled to share the narrative about pancreatic cancer, since it’s a disease that often slips under the radar for many people. This is what I shared with The Australian.

This health issue isn’t getting much focus compared to conditions like skin cancers, breast cancers, and others, but surprisingly, its prevalence is rapidly increasing.

The musician from Sydney, who is battling a disease, shared that he’s undergoing treatment at present and is handling each day as it comes.

‘It continues without end. I’ve undergone almost every known treatment – from scans and ultrasounds to MRIs. In essence, I’ve had a comprehensive treatment plan. At present, I feel fantastic.’

Pancreatic cancer is exceptionally lethal because it grows rapidly and there are few successful treatment methods available.

In comparison to most other types of cancer, the likelihood of a patient living for five years or more beyond their diagnosis is relatively small, standing at approximately 10%.

Later on, Hirst expressed that the sudden diagnosis made him appreciate life more and encouraged anyone feeling ill to undergo testing.

‘Coming up to two years, I thought I just need to get this, literally, off my chest,’ he said.

My takeaway from this is, if you ever experience any symptoms that seem unusual or concerning to you, don’t hesitate to get a basic blood test done. This simple step could potentially save your life and extend it.

Since 1972, the seasoned drummer has been sharing the stage with lead singer Peter Garrett in the band Midnight Oil.

Among other hits, he collaborated on penning several of their cherished tunes such as “Beds Are Burning”, “Blue Sky Mine”, and “Power and the Passion”.

Hirst has two daughters, Lex and Gabriella, from his marriage to his wife Lesley Holland.

Later, frontman Peter Garrett unveiled some unusual name options the legendary Australian rock band almost chose instead.

On The Project in June, the 71-year-old disclosed that options under consideration included ‘Schwampy Moose’, ‘Sparta’, and ‘Television’.

‘Schwampy Moose… we’re very pleased that didn’t get up,’ Garrett joked.

The band eventually settled on Midnight Oil by drawing the name out of a hat in 1976.

The name was reportedly inspired by the Jimi Hendrix song Burning of Midnight Lamp.

In Sydney, 1972 saw the formation of a band initially known as Farm, comprised of musicians Mick Hirst, a guitarist and keyboard player, who was 67 years old at the time.

Garrett was invited to talk about the band’s latest movie, which reflects on their remarkable journey throughout their career.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’m thrilled to share that the captivating two-hour documentary titled “The Hardest Line” made its global debut at the esteemed Sydney Film Festival in June.

The movie, crafted by Australian director Paul Clarke, borrows its name from the chorus of the popular 1982 song “Power and the Passion” by Midnight Oil, one of their most successful hits.

Midnight Oil went on sell over 20 million albums since releasing their first record in 1978.
