In the second season of “The Last of Us,” actress Bella Ramsey and actor Pedro Pascal will portray Joel and Ellie with a fresh dynamic, as fresh disclosures lead to growing tension and separation in their bond.
In a private conversation with Digital Spy, Ramsey opened up about delving into their complex relationship dynamics on the show, considering they are quite close off-screen as well.
They shared with Digital Spy that it was unfortunate to portray such tension with him as they share a great bond off-screen. However, they found it enjoyable to explore fresh ideas and experiment together, but admitted that it wasn’t pleasant to be distant with someone.
The actor portraying Ellie shared insights into her character’s emotions towards Joel, discussing how their relationship evolved during the five-year time skip.
In the time since season one, it appears their bond has significantly changed, and I believe Ellie is gradually pulling away. This change might not be something she’s actively pursuing, but rather an unconscious development.
As I’ve uncovered some fresh details, I can’t help but view him in a new light. This shift in perspective is naturally leading to a bit of emotional space between us.

Ramsey elaborated by saying: “I feel she might secretly despise herself for it, but it seems incredibly relatable to many teenagers dealing with father figures, particularly Ellie and Joel given their history and the apocalyptic world they inhabit. There’s an immense amount of trauma lurking beneath.
This upcoming season, Ramsey will adopt a fresh strategy for the character of Ellie, as she grapples with her changed circumstances.

They mentioned that Ellie has consistently found it difficult to trust, a challenge perhaps exacerbated by her upbringing environment, which has only grown more impactful over time.
As a fan, I can’t help but notice that her perspective on the world seems sharper and more discerning. I believe she’s developed a stronger exterior, becoming more resilient and less affected by external influences. This change will undoubtedly color her perceptions of everything and everyone around her.
In the United Kingdom, you can catch season 2 of “The Last of Us” every Monday at both 2am and 9pm on Sky Atlantic, or stream it on NOW. Meanwhile, in the US, the series is aired on HBO.
