Miami Vice Star Dies After Long Illness
Mario Ernesto Sánchez has died aged 78 after suffering from a ‘long and painful illness’.
The Cuban actor passed away on Monday morning, his assistant confirmed.
‘Mario Ernesto Sánchez passed away today at 3:03 am, following a prolonged and agonizing sickness.’
The actor gained recognition for playing a recurring character, a limousine driver, in Miami Vice, as well as making an appearance in the Christmas special episode of Only Fools and Horses.
More recently, in 2022, he appeared on the TV show Jammerz. Before that, he was part of the HBO reboot of the popular film, Father of the Bride.
Originating from San Antonio de las Vegas, Mario relocated to the United States at the age of 15 and eventually pursued a profession in the field of acting.
Stars rushed to pay tribute on social media.
Ramón A. Sánchez wrote: ‘Cuba and the stage bid farewell to a renowned figure: Mario Ernesto Sánchez. Now he joins Lorca, Molière, Euripides, and other theater legends. Rest in peace, Chachito, and thank you for the legacy you’ve left behind.’
Actress Verónica Abruza stated: ‘Regretful update. Farewell Mario Ernesto Sánchez. Sympathies to his cherished kids, relatives, and companions. I’ll eternally recall your kindness when I first arrived in Miami; your consideration, your courtesy.’
Expressing condolences, we say: ‘May his spirit find solace in the radiant and loving essence from which it came.’ In remembrance, Miami Art Promotion announced: ‘The remarkable actor and filmmaker of Cuban descent, Mario Ernesto Sánchez, has passed away in Miami.’
For decades, his relentless efforts in the Cuban exile theater, starting from his initial arrival in the U.S., have been instrumental in establishing and nurturing Teatro Avante, a group he himself founded. Additionally, his tireless dedication has also played a crucial role in organizing and sustaining the Miami International Hispanic Theater Festival for nearly four decades.
As a devoted admirer, I extend my heartfelt peace to his resting place, and offer my deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his life. This is not just a farewell, but a grand salute to the remarkable journey of his career.
