Beloved Classic Sitcom Is Blowing Up on Streaming Again Despite Unfair Revival Cancellation

Okay, so I’m totally hooked on the new Frasier on Paramount+! It’s amazing to see Kelsey Grammer back as Frasier Crane – the character actually started out on Cheers, which feels like ages ago, but it’s still so good to have him back.

I’m really excited to see Frasier is back in the Top 10 on Paramount+ in a bunch of places! It’s currently at number 10 here in the US, but it’s doing even better in Canada at number 7. Plus, it’s a top 6 show in both Ireland and the UK, according to FlixPatrol. It’s great to see so many people are still enjoying it!

The new streaming version of Frasier is proving popular, coming just over a year after the show’s initial revival, also called Frasier. Despite CBS Studios looking for other streaming platforms to pick it up, no deals were made, meaning the revival ended after two seasons and 20 episodes.

Kelsey Grammer Played Frasier Crane for 40 Years

Kelsey Grammer first appeared as Frasier Crane in a few episodes of Cheers during its third and fourth seasons, and later became a regular cast member for the rest of the show. After Cheers ended, NBC launched its spin-off, Frasier, which aired from 1993 to 2004.

Before Frasier, NBC tried to create a spinoff of Cheers called The Tortellis. It starred Dan Hedaya and Jean Kasem reprising their roles as Nick and Loretta Tortelli. However, the show received negative reviews, didn’t attract many viewers, and was quickly canceled after only 13 episodes.

Created by David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee, Frasier centers on psychiatrist Frasier Crane after he moves back to his hometown of Seattle following a divorce. He begins a new job at radio station KACL, where he hosts a call-in advice show called The Dr. Frasier Crane Show.

The show also revolves around Frasier’s family, including his father, Martin, who is a retired police officer, and his brother, Niles, who is also a psychiatrist. John Mahoney plays Martin, and David Hyde Pierce plays Niles.

Beyond Kelsey Grammer, the show was filled with incredible talent! I especially loved Peri Gilpin as Frasier’s quick-witted producer, Roz Doyle, and Jane Leeves was just perfect as the charming and insightful Daphne Moon, Martin’s caregiver. Dan Butler as Bulldog always brought the laughs, too. And it was such a treat whenever Bebe Neuwirth returned as Lilith – her scenes with Frasier were comedy gold, especially since she originally played her on Cheers!

Similar to the original Cheers, Frasier was highly praised by critics. During its 11 seasons, the show earned an impressive 37 Primetime Emmy Awards – a record for any scripted series at the time. It even won the award for Outstanding Comedy Series five consecutive years.

Following a trend of popular shows being revived, Kelsey Grammer began discussing the possibility of continuing the story of Frasier in 2018. In 2021, Paramount+ approved the series, ordering an initial season of 10 episodes.

The recent revival of Frasier was intended to be a continuation of the main character’s story. However, critics had varying opinions on the new series. It began streaming on Paramount+ in October 2023 and finished its run in November 2024.

The original and revival series of Frasier can be streamed on Paramount+.
