Jurassic Park’s major ending change finally explained 32 years later

David Koepp, the screenwriter of Jurassic Park, has shared insights into why John Hammond’s ending was altered in the movie compared to the book.

1993’s Steven Spielberg movie features Richard Attenborough as the CEO of InGen and ingenious designer of Jurassic Park, a dinosaur-themed island attraction. After a rogue computer programmer named Dennis Nedry (Wayne Knight) releases the dinosaurs, Attenborough, along with his grandchildren, manages to flee the island.

In the initial book by Michael Crichton, it’s John who gets fatally attacked by a group of Procompsognathus dinosaurs following an ankle injury he sustained from a fall.

In an interview with Empire, Koepp labeled the book’s finale as a “downhearted” conclusion, stating that it contradicted the movie’s overall mood.

“Those sound like the sort of choices you need to make when you adapt a novel,” he explained.

In the case of “Jurassic Park”, the book has a more somber tone compared to the movie. Unlike in the film, Richard Attenborough’s character meets a tragic end in the novel, being consumed by his own creations. It felt quite grim, as we had grown fond of this character; couldn’t there be some other way for him to learn his lesson?

The original film, Jurassic Park, gave rise to follow-ups titled The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III, which were released in the years 1997 and 2001.

In 2015, the franchise started anew with “Jurassic World,” a film that was later followed by “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” in 2018 and “Jurassic World Dominion” in 2022.

Or more informally:

The dinosaur franchise got a fresh start with “Jurassic World” in 2015, which was then followed by “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” in 2018 and “Jurassic World Dominion” in 2022.

The fourth movie in the “Jurassic World” series, named “Jurassic World Reborn,” is scheduled to hit theaters on July 2, 2025.

In five years, the new film will be based on a period where the Earth’s environment is predominantly unfavorable to dinosaurs following the events of Jurassic World Dominion.

The ones that are left live in secluded equatorial areas, experiencing climates similar to those where they originally flourished.

In the lush tropical ecosystem, there are three massive beings that possess the secret to a life-saving drug with extraordinary healing powers for humanity.

The main actors are Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey from ‘Bridgerton’, Mahershala Ali, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Rupert Friend, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, and Gareth Edwards in this production.

Jurassic World Rebirth is released in cinemas on July 2, 2025.
