Everything You Need to Remember About The Last of Us Before Season 2
Previously, in the final episode of “The Last of Us” Season 1, Joel and Ellie were grappling with all that had transpired at the Fireflies’ facility in Salt Lake City.
During the entire killing spree Joel (Pedro Pascal) undertook to save Ellie (Bella Ramsey) from being sacrificed for a cure against the zombie fungus pandemic, Ellie was unconscious. However, by the end of the episode, it appeared that she had an instinctive understanding of what Joel did. Though she gave a reluctant “OK” when Joel assured her that the Firefly doctors no longer needed her because they had found other immune people and none could produce a cure, Ellie’s facial expression suggested she had uncovered the truth.
Over two years since its initial airing, “The Last of Us” is back for a hotly-awaited second season, setting up for another leap in time. Developed from the successful video game series and conceived by Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the game, and Craig Mazin, who also worked on “Chernobyl”, Season 1 focused on the evolving bond between Joel, a tough survivor, and Ellie, a 14-year-old orphan girl, as they journeyed west across America, 20 years after a cordyceps brain infection decimated modern civilization.
Before Season 2 of “The Last of Us” debuts on April 13, here’s a recap of key points from its first season.
What happened between Joel and Ellie?
Initially, Joel was employed by Marlene (Merle Dandridge), who headed the Firefly resistance group, for the task of clandestinely transporting Ellie from the Boston quarantine area controlled by FEDRA, the military administration, to the ancient Massachusetts State House. However, it wasn’t long before he discovered that Ellie had been bitten three weeks prior by a stage 3 “clicker,” a type of infected individual resistant to the Cordyceps fungus. This discovery led Marlene to speculate that Ellie’s genetic makeup could potentially be used to develop a vaccine capable of combating the infection.
Despite his initial caution around Ellie, when Joel learned that the Fireflies who were supposedly meeting her at the state house had been killed, he eventually consented to accompany her on a journey across the country in search of their research facility. As they navigated numerous post-apocalyptic dangers together, their bond grew stronger and tighter, providing them both with a renewed purpose for living.
Why is Ellie immune?
In the final episode of Season 1, it was revealed that Ellie’s mother, Anna (the character voiced by Ashley Johnson), was bitten by an infected while delivering Ellie. This exposure caused tiny amounts of Cordyceps to enter Ellie’s body through her umbilical cord. As Marlene explained, these traces created a “chemical signal” that made typical Cordyceps believe that Ellie herself was infected.
Later on, Marlene disclosed certain details, but unfortunately, she also informed Joel that the Firefly doctor intended to take Ellie’s brain against her will, using it to create a vaccine by studying her unique immune cells.
She clarified that their doctor believes Cordyceps has been part of Ellie since birth. His plan is to extract it, cultivate its cells in a laboratory, synthesize the chemical signals it produces, and potentially administer these to others as a potential cure.
After that, Joel took drastic action to save Ellie by killing nearly everyone in the hospital, including the surgeon. In doing so, he inadvertently destroyed humanity’s last hope for a cure. When Ellie began to regain consciousness from the anesthesia, Joel deceived her, saying, “They were running some tests on you and others. It turns out there are many more like you, people who are immune. The doctors have found dozens of them, but they can’t seem to find a solution. They’ve stopped looking for a cure.
What to expect at the start of Season 2
In the second season of the series, we’ll leap forward five years to find Joel and Ellie living at a settlement founded by Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and his wife Maria (Rutina Wesley) in Jackson, Wyoming. However, their relationship has deteriorated significantly over time. But, a shockingly violent incident is about to shake things up drastically.
In discussing The Last of Us Part II video game without revealing specific details, we can mention that the storyline is expected to be much darker compared to Season 1, taking it to unprecedented levels. However, even dedicated gamers might not anticipate all the surprises in store.
According to Druckmann, he adores the alterations we’ve implemented. “This is a unique take on our original tale,” he said, “but you can still see its core elements. Beyond excitement, I’m genuinely eager to learn what people think about it.
