The Last of Us Season 2: 5 Shocking Twists to Expect from the Game Adaptation
Spoilers for The Last of Us Part II video game and (potentially) HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2
If you found “The Last of Us” grim, prepare for even more darkness in its sequel. Debuting on April 13, “The Last of Us Season 2” is adapted from the highly acclaimed video game “The Last of Us Part II”. This story revolves around the unending cycle of vengeance and places our protagonist Ellie not against the usual zombies, but people who wish to harm her and her adopted father Joel. The series creators have hinted that they will stretch the story from “The Last of Us Part II” over at least two seasons.
As a dedicated cinephile, I found myself deeply immersed in the gripping tale of “The Last of Us,” both the game and its HBO adaptation. The storyline concluded with Joel, my character and Ellie’s protector, guiding her, the lone individual immune to the zombie plague, across a post-apocalyptic United States to Salt Lake City. There, a resistance group known as the Fireflies were making a stand against FEDRA, a federal agency that had essentially seized control of the country through martial law. The Fireflies intended to study Ellie, hoping to discover a cure for the infection that had turned most of humanity into mindless monsters.
However, upon reaching Salt Lake City, Joel came to a heart-wrenching realization: Ellie would have to sacrifice her life so that doctors could create a cure. Overwhelmed with emotion, he stormed through the hospital, leaving a trail of unconscious or dead doctors, nurses, and even some Firefly freedom fighters in his wake. When Ellie regained consciousness and asked about what had transpired, Joel chose to deceive her.
In approximately five years, the sequel finds Ellie and Joel traveling to Jackson, Wyoming, where Joel’s brother resides within a community. Initially, Ellie harbors resentment towards Joel that unfolds gradually throughout the narrative, hinting at it possibly stemming from the enigmatic circumstances behind their hasty exit from Salt Lake City.
In the beginning, Ellie, a young woman immune to the fungal infection that has decimated humanity, is living with her friend and mentor, Joel, who saved her life years ago. They are part of a community in Jackson, Wyoming, where they live relatively peacefully. However, Ellie becomes determined to find the Fireflies, a resistance group she believes can help her create a cure for the infection.
Joel initially opposes this plan due to the pain it caused him when he broke his promise to Ellie years ago by taking her away from the Fireflies and using her for a potentially fatal operation. But Ellie’s persistence, along with a letter from Marlene, the leader of the Fireflies, convinces Joel to help her find them.
Their journey takes them to Seattle, where they encounter various hostile groups, including the Scars, a group led by a former Firefly named Scott, who seek revenge on Joel for his past actions. They also meet Dina, a young woman who becomes close to Ellie and helps them navigate the dangerous city.
Throughout their journey, Ellie uncovers more about the history of the Fireflies and the events that led to Joel’s initial betrayal. She also discovers a shocking truth: the person she has been seeking for help may not be who she thought they were.
In the second half of the game, the plot takes several unexpected turns as Ellie seeks revenge and confronts the people responsible for her pain and loss. The story becomes more complex and emotionally intense, leading to a dramatic conclusion that sets up potential events for the second season of the show.
Abby kills Joel
In “The Last of Us Part II,” a fresh and contentious figure named Abby made her debut in the gaming franchise. Abby is the offspring of the Firefly doctor who was intended to perform an operation on Ellie before Joel ended his life. Throughout the game, players alternate between controlling Ellie and Abby, which has caused displeasure among some fans of Joel.
In this scenario, we encounter Abby along with her companions as they pursue Joel in Jackson. Abby encounters a group of zombies and is rescued by Joel and his brother, Tommy. Later on, Abby guides Joel and Tommy back to her friends’ settlement. Upon arrival, Abby’s companions restrain Joel, and in an act of extreme violence, Abby takes the life of Joel.
Ellie manages to make it there on the dot to witness Joel’s final moments. Despite their frosty relationship over the years, Ellie attempts to rescue her makeshift father, but she is ultimately subdued by Abby’s companions. In an unexpected turn of events, Abby elects to spare both Ellie and Tommy’s lives.
Ellie and Tommy try to avenge Joel’s death
In a shift from the game, Tommy, who believes Ellie might seek revenge for Joel, departs Jackson to track down Abby, possibly averting Ellie’s path. Moreover, in the series, Tommy’s wife Maria is expecting a child, making him a father of a four-year-old. This implies that he could be embarking on a potentially lethal journey.
Ellie eventually trails after him. However, while they may be pretending to retrieve Tommy, it’s clear that Ellie intends to confront Abby on her own as well. Overwhelmed by guilt for not being close to Joel during his last years and enraged at losing the only father figure in her life, Ellie becomes deeply involved in seeking revenge for Joel, as well.
Two violent factions battle for Seattle
In their pursuit, Ellie and Dina arrive at Seattle, where Abby’s associates have joined forces with a rebellious faction called the Washington Liberation Front (commonly known as wolves), headed by an individual named Isaac. Though initially noble in intent, this group has morphed into an oppressive regime itself, battling against a radical cult they label the Seraphites, or “the scars.” The Seraphites employ unconventional warfare to target WLF soldiers, prompting the latter to retaliate through interrogations, torture, and murder of the Seraphites.
Ellie, Dina, and eventually Jesse – who locates them in Seattle – must avoid the conflict between these two groups while hunting for Tommy. Abby and her companions, having struck a deal with Isaac, find themselves soldiers and must weigh the amount of cruel acts they’re prepared to do for this military commander in order to gain information about Jackson colony and resources.
Dina reveals she’s pregnant
In this game, Dina experiences a significant amount of violence, such as being knocked off a horse, coming close to being strangled, and having her head repeatedly hit the ground. Consequently, it’s very unsettling when Dina tells Ellie that she is pregnant with Jesse’s child.
Ellie struggles with conflicting emotions towards Dina joining her in her quest for revenge, even though she’s aware that Dina is pregnant. Initially, Ellie views Dina as a hindrance and feels annoyed by her rash actions. Yet, there’s also a sense of responsibility towards Dina, much like Jesse does once he joins them, unaware of the pregnancy before his departure from Jackson.
Despite the new situations, Ellie remains determined to carry out her perilous task. Having the chance to start a family adds emotional complexity. Joel offered Ellie security in Jackson, and one could argue that repaying him would involve staying there and starting a family with the woman she cares for. However, Ellie’s intense animosity towards Abby, fueled by Tommy’s thirst for vengeance, keeps her from choosing the most straightforward and secure path.
The main dilemma of the tale revolves around what Ellie is prepared to give up for revenge against Joel. Meanwhile, Abby encounters comparable choices, yet her personal conflicts and responsibilities towards those who rely on her unfold more prominently later in the game. It’s expected that Abby’s narrative will take center stage in Season 3.
A lot of people die
In the world of “The Last of Us II”, my perspective aligns with the notion that retaliation begets more violence, leaving us all in darkness. The slaying of Abby’s father ignites a chain of events leading to Joel’s demise, prompting Tommy and Ellie to embark on a violent journey. This, in turn, instigates Abby to seek vengeance for her friends and comrades. Tragically, many lives are lost, often in gruesome fashions. Characters we’ve grown attached to endure torment at the hands of those we thought we knew and cherished.
The intention behind “The Last of Us Part II” was to involve players more deeply in the brutalities depicted within the game. Typically, gamers take pride in their victories in games. However, “The Last of Us Part II” aimed to make them feel the harsh consequences of their actions. This was achieved by allowing players to develop an emotional bond or even understanding with a particular group of characters, only to then switch control and be tasked with attacking those very individuals they had come to care for.
In the initial game, playing as Joel, you were compelled to eliminate harmless doctors to protect Ellie. Contrastingly, in the subsequent installment, you assume the roles of both Ellie and Abby, where you find yourself obliged to take lives, often not for self-defense but as part of a relentless pursuit of vengeance. It’s yet to be determined if the TV series, which allows viewers merely to observe rather than participate in these horrific acts, will retain its significant impact as it embarks on its second season.
