Melanie Sykes Reveals Dark Thoughts of Death as a Relief from Pain
Melanie Sykes shared that she had considered ending her life as a means to escape the suffering and mental anguish she was experiencing.
The television host, aged 54, feels that instead of being a frightening event, death could serve as a means of escape from pain and suffering.
Additionally, Melanie mentions her preference for personal religious experiences in quiet church settings, where she finds solace in private prayer without a priest or congregation present, allowing her to freely cry when needed.
Last week, she openly expressed her thoughts on Substack, a platform designed for writers and creators. In her discussion, she shared that at one point, she contemplated death as an escape route.
She expressed: ‘I’ve never feared death; at times, it seemed like a gentle respite from my sorrow. My intense sensitivity, compassion, and mistreatment have inflicted deep pain upon me, a suffering I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Throughout my life, I’ve often felt that the pain I endure is too great, and death might offer some relief.’
Talking about people’s views on death and dying, this mother of two expresses herself as someone with a spiritual outlook, choosing to accept rather than avoid the unavoidable.

She suggests: ‘Many individuals find it difficult to engage when I discuss those who are no longer with us. Some even feel entitled to claim a person’s memory and scrutinize your existence on their behalf.’
In the ’90s, a famous TV personality thrived in the bustling limelight of London’s media world. Today, that individual prefers spending time in quiet, church interiors.
She mentioned that she visits the church when there are no sermons and the congregation is absent. It’s a peaceful, short time where she feels secure from any harm. She sits there, tears of joy streaming down her face, as she basks in the light, tranquility, and the sincere purging of lingering pain.
In my latest newsletter, I’ve shared my personal viewpoint: finding peace amidst the presence of the deceased can be quite soothing.
Or, more casually:
In my recent write-up, I expressed a rather unique perspective – that being surrounded by the departed can offer a sense of comfort.
‘The ones who parted from me through death remain ever-present in my life. I don’t feel the need to pay my respects at their gravesites, even though I enjoy visiting cemeteries. Instead, they are with me daily; I communicate with them in my thoughts and prayers.’
Mel is the mother of two sons, Roman (age 23) and Valentino (age 21). She was married to actor Daniel Caltagirione from 2001 until they divorced in 2008. This was her first marriage.
Now Melanie says that motherhood has made her more aware of her mortality.
Melanie shared that having her kids made her realize the depth of her own frailty and the reality of her mortality. She used the term ‘vulnerable’ not in a negative way, but rather to emphasize how delicate life is and should be cherished, safeguarded, honored, and lived fully.

Hailing from the heart of Lancashire, I, a die-hard fan, found myself catapulted into the limelight back in 1996, all thanks to a captivating TV commercial where I served up chilled Boddingtons Bitter from an ice cream truck. Quite the unexpected turn of events!
From 1997, I couldn’t help but become utterly captivated as I watched my beloved star soar through the realm of television. It all started with the Big Breakfast, a show that quickly became my morning ritual. But the real magic happened in 2002 when she graced our screens alongside the legendary Des O’Connor on Today with Des and Mel. Each day, I eagerly tuned in, cherishing every moment spent with these television titans.
In the year 2014, she ventured into the jungle to participate in ITV’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, eventually placing third behind contestant Jake Quickenden from The X Factor.
But in 2021, following her diagnosis with autism, she finally turned her back on showbiz.
Regarding her situation, she shared that being diagnosed with autism late in life has improved her life significantly. She emphasized that it was all about putting in the effort. For the first time, she expressed, she is finally prioritizing herself.
