Why Drop’s real hero is Matt the waiter – the best scene-stealer of the year so far

Dropping the entire “your date will die if you don’t” scenario, the show Drop accurately captures many aspects of contemporary dating and the apprehension that comes with it.

However, this fresh, captivating thriller – currently showing in theaters – remarkably portrays the type of overly enthusiastic and chatty waiter that many of us have encountered while dining out.

Enter Matt, brilliantly played by actor and comedian Jeffery Self.

Is it possible that Matt is either experimenting with his improv humor on Allison Janney’s character who supposedly has a fear of heights or showing up at the most inconvenient times? Either way, you likely wouldn’t want him as your server. However, he always manages to outshine every scene he’s in.

In a more simplified way,
Supporting characters can be just as significant as the lead roles because they often provide relief from tension in the best movies, like Randy Meeks in Scream and Rod Williams in Get Out. These characters may not always be the main focus, but they tend to make a lasting impression, even when the main stars are impressive.

We’re not the only ones who are a fan of Jeffery Self’s performance as Matt.

Meghann Fahy expressed to Digital Spy that he was extraordinary, leaving them virtually breathless, while Brandon Sklenar mentioned that Allison Janney’s lines were full of hilarious improvisations, with each repetition bringing a fresh joke.

Instead of laughing more than you at Matt during the thriller this weekend, it could be that the main actors in Drop were chuckling even more than your anticipated laughter at Matt.

In a different wording: “He’s incredibly talented, as I recall from when we filmed that scene. He kept entering and exiting, and each time he did, he added another hilarious element to the take.” (Fahy recounted)

As a devoted admirer, I found myself struggling to suppress my laughter, fearing it might mar the pristine quality of his performance. His extraordinary talent and pivotal role in the movie made it impossible not to be captivated by him during its premiere.

Indeed, Matt the waiter is a true champion in our eyes. While he may not actively save the day, his service and kindness are what make him a hero close to ours hearts.
