Rock Legend Ioannis Vasilopoulos Passes Away, Family Shares Heartfelt Tribute

Iconic rock album cover designer Ioannis Vasilopoulos has died at the age of 66.

On April 7, the renowned designer Ioannis, known for creating album covers for bands such as Bon Jovi and Deep Purple, sadly passed away.

They publicly shared the heartbreaking news of his passing, in a poignant obituary posted on a memorial website dedicated to him.

With a deep sense of sorrow, we share the news that Ioannis, our cherished artist, husband, father, sibling, grandfather, and dear friend, has departed from us to join the realm beyond.

As an ardent admirer, it brings me immense solace to know that Ioannis is now back with his cherished family – his father, mother, and dear friends. The overwhelming affection shared towards Ioannis and his craft serves as a heartening source of comfort for me too.

Ioannis had numerous activities he yearned to undertake, and a multitude of fresh ventures he was eager to disclose.

Together as a family, it’s our responsibility to carry on with the task at hand, and that’s exactly what we intend to do. His spirit will endure through his astonishing artwork.

The sparkle of his radiant grin and the youthful exuberance he carried live eternally within his artistic creations. There is no doubt that Ioannis will forever be celebrated as one of the greatest artists in rock music history.

Ioannis leaves behind his wife Lisa, daughter Maria and her husband Conor, as well as grandchildren Henry and Jack. Additionally, he has a brother named George and other cherished family members.

On Friday, April 11, a Greek Orthodox Church will host a private funeral service where his family and close acquaintances will come together to honor and mourn the much-loved musical personality.

Back in the day, I was a young lad hailing from the cradle of civilization, Athens, Greece. However, my journey took an exciting turn when I embarked on a voyage to the land of opportunity, the United States, in 1967. It was there that my ardor for animation and music ignited like a spark, transforming into a blazing passion that has guided me ever since.

He discovered his love for creating album artwork during his college years and produced his initial record, paving the way for his first MTV music video direction for Art In America, which came afterward.

This individual has created over 350 album cover designs for well-known groups such as Bon Jovi, Deep Purple, Skid Row, Blue Öyster Cult, and Starship, to name a few.

Besides his current work, Ioannis has collaborated with companies like Sony Music, Universal Music, Starz, Virgin Records, and numerous classic rock radio stations on various significant initiatives.

The art he created was additionally showcased in a Led Zeppelin-focused book called “Get the Led Out,” penned by Denny Somach and co-authored with Martin Popoff.

Over a variety of exhibitions across the United States, the designer displayed his creations, and he kept selling his artworks worldwide up until his passing.

A flood of tributes poured in from the artist’s celebrated companions and followers, as many expressed sympathy and solidarity with his family on various social media platforms.

Patrick Prince, the editor of Goldmine Magazine, expressed that Ioannis was not just a kind-hearted individual but also a cherished companion.

His artistic abilities knew no bounds, showing an unparalleled passion that outshone other artists I’ve encountered. He held a deep affection for his work, particularly with rock and roll groups.

Regardless of whether his artwork was for The Allman Brothers Band or a neighborhood group nearby, he always poured one hundred percent of his effort into each project, reflecting the unique identity of the respective artist.
