‘An unpleasant experience’: Original Scream 7 director reveals why he really left horror sequel

In his initial interview following his departure, the original director of “Scream 7” has disclosed the actual reasons behind him stepping away from the horror sequel.

Originally slated to direct the film, Christopher Landon stepped away from the project towards the end of 2023 after actors Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega left it.

As a gamer, I’ve taken the gritty, turbulent tale that the director labeled “The Saga” and transformed it into my latest creation – the movie called “Drop”. This once uncomfortable journey is now a piece of work I can be proud of.

In a conversation with Vanity Fair, Landon reminisced that Barrera’s departure (apparently due to posts related to the Israel-Palestine dispute) led to the film collapsing unexpectedly. He further stated, “It was heartbreaking to have to abruptly halt all our plans.

The film director disclosed that he had been subjected to unsettling threats on social media, as some individuals falsely accused him when the decision to terminate was actually made by the movie’s producers.

He revealed that there were instances where people made threats against him and his family, even escalating to a level where the FBI had to intervene. The messages he received read, “I intend to locate your children and end their lives since you advocate for child homicide.

At different studios and the FBI, the heads of security were tasked with investigating the threatening behavior. It was extremely hostile and genuinely terrifying.

He made it clear that he did not dismiss Barrera, stating instead: “Many believe I played a part in it, but I assure you, it wasn’t me who made the decision. I had absolutely no influence or power over the matter whatsoever.

In situations where individuals lack insight into the inner workings and power structure of Hollywood, fans might respond with something akin to, “That’s the one!” Consequently, I found myself facing criticism, as if I were their target, much like a knife being drawn.

Landon subsequently disclosed that he voluntarily stepped down from his role as director, even after being urged to continue, because the level of mistreatment had become overwhelming.

He explained, “They suggested I should carry on,” but the excessive cruelty he encountered led him to refuse, choosing not to invest any piece of himself in such an environment.

In my opinion, the benefits didn’t outweigh the costs. Instead, I prefer to channel my energy towards a place that values and respects me more. The hostility and mistreatment were simply unbearable, and it extinguished my passion for continuing down this path.

He expressed sadness over losing one of his cherished career opportunities amidst the confusion, but harbored absolutely no anger. Instead, he extended well wishes for Kevin Williamson, who will now take on that role, hinting at a fantastic final product.

Scream 7 will be released in cinemas on February 27, 2026. Drop releases is in cinemas on April 11.
