To introduce its new denim collection for Spring/Summer 2026, Denim Tears hosted a vibrant event in the heart of SoHo, New York City, celebrating the history and culture of the African diaspora.

From the very beginning, Tremaine Emory’s label has explored the cultural heritage of Africa and its people around the world, and now he’s turning his attention to the Moko Jumbie tradition of the Caribbean. This unique culture is known for its striking performers who walk on incredibly tall stilts – some reaching over 10 feet high.

Kaisokah Moko Jumbies USA collaborated with a brand to create custom, extra-long jeans specifically for their performances. Featuring unique denim washes and cotton wreath designs, the Moko Jumbies captivated audiences as they paraded from Orchard Street to African Diaspora Goods on Spring Street.

Moko Jumbie, a tradition seen throughout communities of African descent, began with stilt-walking in West Africa. Enslaved African communities blended this practice with carnival celebrations, and it was first recorded in 1791. The name ‘Moko’ comes from a West African word for healer, and ‘Jumbie’ is a Caribbean term for spirit, rooted in the Kongo word ‘zumbi’.

Emory, in a December interview with TopMob, highlighted the deep link between denim and the history of the African diaspora. He pointed out that while denim is often considered an American classic, its origins and connection to Black history are rarely acknowledged by established brands. Emory emphasized that the story of denim actually begins with slavery, offering a different perspective on this widely recognized garment.

The new Denim Tears Spring/Summer 2026 collection will be available starting April 17th, both online at the Denim Tears website and in their store.
