Newsmax defamed Dominion Voting Systems, judge rules
On Wednesday, a court in Delaware determined that right-wing news network Newsmax had slandered Dominion Voting Systems by spreading untrue claims that the company manipulated the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
The trial, commencing on April 28, will determine the damages (unless there’s a settlement) with Dominion demanding compensation amounting to $1.6 billion.
Last week’s decision by Judge Eric B. Davis was made following the public listing of Newsmax, a media company based in Boca Raton, Florida.
Initially, I was thrilled as the stock soared above $220 in its early trading days. However, today, I found myself dismayed as the same stock has plummeted to a disappointing $34 per share, marking an 11% decline. This descent occurred on a day when the overall market rallied following President Trump’s announcement of a pause on most proposed tariffs.

Among the channels airing unfounded allegations from Trump’s associates and backers was Newsmax, who claimed that Dominion, a vote-counting machine and software provider, was secretly developed in Venezuela to manipulate elections for former leader Hugo Chavez, and that it possesses capabilities to alter votes.
In the 2020 presidential election that Joe Biden won, there was no substantial proof of nationwide voter fraud. Moreover, the Dominion’s software and equipment were not employed outside Los Angeles County during that election.

In simpler terms, Newsmax defended their 2020 election news coverage by stating it was built upon claims made by the president, his team, and congressional members, which they considered as valid news content. However, the judge found these arguments unconvincing.
Dominion Voting Systems filed a lawsuit against Fox News, alleging similar claims. Not long after a jury was selected for the trial, Fox News, under the ownership of Rupert Murdoch, reached a settlement worth $787.5 million.
