Death in Paradise viewer shares wild Mervin paternity theory – but fans aren’t sure
A supporter of the show “Death in Paradise” has come up with an intriguing speculation concerning the true identity of Mervin’s father, yet not all agree with this idea.
In Season 14, the beloved cozy crime show featured a change in its lead detective role, with Don Gilet stepping into the shoes of Ralf Little as the latest Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson on the island of Saint Marie.
More recently, Mervin relocated to Saint Marie in search of his biological mother, whom he was put up for adoption and tragically passed away. (In this version, I’ve used “relocated” instead of “moved,” “put up for adoption” for “gave him up for adoption,” and “tragically passed away” for “sadly died.”)

While investigating his mother’s background, the detective uncovers that he has a sibling living on a Caribbean island. However, some viewers suspect there might be additional secrets hidden within Mervin’s family history.
On Reddit, a fan of “Death in Paradise” proposed an intriguing theory: They speculated that Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, played by Don Warrington, might actually be Mervin’s father.
“Selwyn is Mervin’s Dad,” the fan wrote, though they admitted their theory was a tad far-fetched.
“He had to step down when Mervin’s became a DI on the island,” they continued.
I can’t think of anything else that would make sense within the narrative, and it certainly has more flaws than a sieve. However, this is my choice for now.
Other fans of the series joined the conversation, picking apart holes in the theory.
One viewer commented, “The idea isn’t terrible, but it seems illogical,” further explaining, “Moreover, it wouldn’t significantly enhance the plot, given that Selwyn already has a daughter who is likely more than a decade younger than Mervin.
Another fan proposed, “Selwyn has been involved in a single mystery involving a child. Introducing another one might seem repetitive or dull.
Finally, another viewer reminded his fellow fans that Mervin was aware of his dad’s identity.
They stated that Mervin was absolutely certain about the identity of his father, yet it’s important to note that just because he might be correct, it doesn’t sit well or feel intuitive.
The final episode of Season 14 was broadcasted on March 28, and it seems there are some unresolved plot points that the upcoming season will address. It’s been confirmed that Gilet will reprise his role as Mervin for the next installment.
