A recently launched comedy series, now streaming on Hulu and Disney+, has quickly become more popular than the new, highly praised Star Wars television show.
As a big fan of streaming comedies, I’ve really enjoyed some of the original shows Disney+ and Hulu have put out. I’ve binged everything from the fun of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and the nostalgia of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, to shows like Diary of a Future President, Doogie Kameāloha M.D., The Santa Clauses, the clever mystery of Only Murders in the Building, and even the hilarious Chad Powers. They’ve got a pretty solid lineup!
Disney+’s newest comedy, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, has become the most-watched show on the platform, surpassing the Star Wars animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. The show is available on both Hulu and Disney+.
Originally released on April 6th, Maul started at the top of the charts but has since dropped to No. 2. It was overtaken by the new Malcolm in the Middle reboot, which premiered on April 10th.
Wrapping up the Top 10 on Disney+ right now, I’ve been checking out a pretty diverse bunch of titles. Just hitting Hulu, The Testaments is already making waves, and I also saw Perfect Crown, Dear Killer Nannies, and the lovely Secrets of the Bees all charting. For those keeping up with TV, the season finale of High Potential (which originally aired on ABC) is still getting views, alongside the new Daredevil: Born Again. Rounding it out are the fascinating Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette and, for a bit of classic comfort, Scrubs is still going strong!
Viewers on Rotten Tomatoes have reacted quite differently to the new releases Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair and Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.
The comedy series has received generally positive reviews, with critics giving it a 78% score and audiences a 72%. However, the animated show is even more popular, earning a perfect 100% score from critics and a 94% score from audiences, making Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord one of the highest-rated series in the entire franchise.
Surprisingly, Obi-Wan Kenobi has received even higher ratings than Andor, the critically acclaimed series that served as a prequel to Rogue One and is often considered one of the best Star Wars stories ever told.
Sam Witwer is back as the villain Maul in the new series Maul – Shadow Lord. He previously voiced the character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Solo: A Star Wars Story. This new series follows Maul after the events of The Clone Wars as he looks for someone to train and rebuilds his criminal empire.
New episodes will be released every Monday, with the last one coming out on May 4th for Star Wars Day. This gives the series a good chance to become the most popular show on Disney+ again. Good news for fans – Disney and Lucasfilm have already confirmed a second season is in the works.
Twenty years after the original series ended, most of the cast of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is back together, including Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Jane Kaczmarek. The new four-episode series follows Malcolm as he tries to keep his distance from his famously chaotic family, having built a good life with his daughter and girlfriend.
Currently, the series isn’t being continued, but the creator, Linwood Boomer, hasn’t said it will never happen.
You can now watch “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair” on Hulu (including through the Hulu app on Disney+). And, new episodes of “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord” become available on Disney+ every Monday.
