CBB’s Shocking Launch: Is This the Worst Ever?

2025 saw the debut of Celebrity Big Brother with record-low viewership for a premiere episode, leaving many fans speculating about the underlying reason behind these disappointing numbers.

On Monday evening, the well-known reality show made its comeback with a fresh season, featuring celebrities like Mickey Rourke and Jojo Siwa alongside other famous personalities such as Trisha Goddard and Chesney Hawkes residing in the renowned house.

Upon Mickey’s debut, he garnered attention due to his unusual behavior towards host AJ Odudu, but this did not result in significant increases in viewership.

Last night’s data revealed that the show attracted a peak audience of 2.1 million viewers, while the total average was 1.8 million.

The viewership dropped significantly from the high of 3.2 million viewers reached in the previous year, which was during the show’s debut of its celebrity edition since 2018.

As a devoted viewer, I must admit that the show we were following drew in an impressive number of viewers aged 16 to 34, making it the most watched program during that time slot. In fact, it outperformed all four competing channels combined.

Although the figure was lower compared to last year, enthusiasts have turned to X to highlight a crucial concern regarding these statistics.

It was observed that Celebrity Big Brother often attracts a younger demographic, suggesting that quite a few of these young viewers may have tuned in to the premiere on ITVX.

In 2021, I tuned in, just like many others, to the live streaming of the CBB launch on YouTube. Noteworthy is that neither of these viewership numbers would have factored into the initial television ratings.

However, does the count encompass viewers from both ITVX and YouTube since they are distinct platforms?

Let’s keep in mind that the audience for #CBBUK tends to be younger, who often watch on ITVX, which isn’t included in these viewership statistics.

‘It’s not the disaster some people paint it out to be.’

‘It’s not brilliant. It did win the 9pm slot though;’

To be honest, overnight ratings aren’t particularly valuable these days. Still, premiering on a Monday night has always been intriguing from a statistical perspective. I’m eager to see how it unfolds, especially once ITVX is included. It’s unfortunate because this year’s production was significantly better than last.

I believe the 1.8m figure may not include ITVX viewers, which is quite respectable considering my personal observations. Many people I know primarily watch content on devices other than traditional TVs, and I myself don’t own one. I anticipate that the viewership will significantly increase over the 7-day period.

Viewers of Celebrity Big Brother have criticized Mickey’s strange or unsettling behavior during the show’s premiere, labeling it as inappropriate and off-putting.

Shortly after his arrival, it became apparent that the Hollywood actor was flirting with AJ Odudu, the host of the ITV show. Following their introduction by co-host Will Best, Mickey walked up to AJ on stage, wrapping his arms around her waist and spinning her in a dance.

Surprised by Mickey’s remark, AJ let out a surprised breath before he drew her near, saying, “You certainly know how to be playful,” with the American celebrity still holding onto her midriff.

As the presenter became increasingly uneasy, yet maintaining a steady professional demeanor, she repeatedly requested the actor to cease fixating on me. With a firm grip on his shoulders, she guided him towards the exit, only to hear him protest, “No, I insist on staying by your side.

In the heat of the moment, my fellow host, Will Best, intervened, gently disengaging me from a rather aggressive encounter with an actor named Mickey. He exclaimed, “Leave AJ alone!” as the actor made his exit.

Spectators expressed their astonishment over the interaction between Will Njobvu and Mickey on TikTok, with many labeling Mickey as disrespectful. Meanwhile, LukeEliKinTV captioned a video clip with the phrase: “Appalled, remove him immediately.

Others such as @Sophsingsandthings posted their real-time reactions to the star’s entrance.

The TikToker said that after a positive first impression, she decided he was ‘cringey and creepy.’

Fans expressed their concerns on a platform previously known as X (Twitter), saying: “Now I’m worried about every woman in that house given Mickey’s behavior towards AJ during live TV.

I feel a scandal might unfold with Mickey Rourke this season, I have a feeling about it.” or “I wasn’t impressed by Mickey’s appearance earlier, could lead to some controversy perhaps?

‘Everyone’s joking about Mickey Rouke and I get why, but I want to be serious for a second.

It’s not right for any TV presenter, regardless of gender, to make someone else uncomfortable as AJ apparently did. If he cannot maintain professionalism around women, then perhaps he should not have been invited onto this show in the first place. Frankly, I found it unacceptable.

It’s impossible that Mickey Rourke won’t either exit gracefully or be removed due to inappropriate behavior.

Celebrity Big Brother continues on Tuesday at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
