“Mind-blowing” period thriller breaks streaming record – see it now

A war film with a surprising twist has quickly become a streaming hit, topping watch lists around the globe. Released on Prime Video on January 2nd, the German-language movie The Tank (originally titled Der Tiger) centers on a five-person crew operating a German Tiger tank on a confidential mission behind enemy lines.

Dennis Gansel, who wrote and directed the film with Colin Teevan, explores the psychological toll the mission takes on the soldiers, ultimately turning it into a descent into a grim and unsettling experience.

I recently learned about a really disturbing film called The Tank. It shows how the Nazis actually gave their soldiers meth – seriously! – to keep them going during battles. The movie really gets into how messed up that was, and the terrible toll it took on the soldiers’ minds. It’s a tough watch, but it shows a horrifying side of history I hadn’t really known about.

The movie, which is now the most-streamed German-language film on Prime Video, stars David Schütter, Laurence Rupp, and Leonard Kunz.

The film has a score of 6.5 out of 10 on IMDb, where fans are hailing it as a “masterpiece”.

One fan declared they’ll be revisiting this film for years, calling it a ’10/10 masterpiece.’ Another viewer was equally impressed, describing it as ‘mind-blowing‘ and a must-see. They hinted at surprising twists, adding, ‘Things aren’t what they appear to be,’ without giving away any spoilers.

Although the ending proved controversial, many viewers appreciated the story’s focus on the personal impact of war, rather than large-scale battles.

“It feels realistic, tense, and very human without drifting into sentimentality,” one person wrote.

The scenes taking place inside the tanks create a similar feeling of intense confinement and fear as the movie Das Boot. While the combat scenes are well-made and visually appealing, they aren’t a major focus of the film.

One viewer described the film as a complex and engaging war story with surprising twists, blending elements of spirituality, bravery, and the harsh realities of conflict.

The Tank is streaming on Prime Video.
