Note: The following article contains discussion of themes including suicide.
Penelope Wilton, known for Downton Abbey, and Jonathan Pryce, from Slow Horses, will star in ITV’s new four-part drama, Mavis Eccleston. The series is based on the true story of Mavis Eccleston, who survived a suicide pact with her husband after almost 60 years of marriage. After her husband’s death, Mavis was unexpectedly arrested and accused of murder.
Chris Lang wrote the script and Bruce Goodison will direct the series Mavis Eccleston, starring Wilton and Pryce as Mavis and Dennis Eccleston. Filming is scheduled to begin in June 2026. Tom Brittney, known for his work on Grantchester, also helped develop the show.
Lang explained in a press release that he was immediately captivated by the story of Mavis and Dennis, and felt compelled to write the screenplay – though perhaps not for the obvious reasons.

While their story touches on big questions about life and death, I’ve always seen it as something more fundamental: a story about love, and the power of unconditional love.
James Durie of Highroad Entertainment, the production company behind the series, explained that the touching and hopeful connection between the characters Mavis and Dennis is the heart of the show, and they believe it will connect with viewers globally.
What to Read Next
ITV has announced that the storyline will focus on Mavis and Dennis’ family trying to convince them not to take a fatal mix of drugs. However, Mavis and Dennis are determined to end their lives together.
In a statement, Wilton spoke of the “huge responsibility and true honour” of telling this story.
She said Mavis deeply loved her husband, and their strong connection was obvious to everyone. They lived life as they chose, and when he passed away, she wanted to honor his final requests. It’s heartbreaking to think she could spend the rest of her life in prison, all because she acted out of love.
Pryce discussed how they approached telling this story, saying it’s a moving and relevant portrayal of a couple grappling with the difficult decision of assisted dying. He hopes the film will respectfully capture their strong love and courage.

Brittney introduced Mavis Eccleston to Corestar, the production company, believing her story, if told with sensitivity and understanding, could become a compelling drama and add meaningful insight to an important, ongoing discussion.
Because of my previous experience with ITV, I was confident it was the right place for my work, as they consistently support impactful stories about social justice.
Mavis Eccleston will air on ITV.
