Let me tell you, the voice acting in Invincible has been a major reason for its success – seriously, they’ve got an incredible cast! For the most part, the choices have been brilliant, perfectly capturing the spirit of the comic. But Season 4 introduced a really important character, and honestly, the voice just doesn’t fit. It’s a rare case where I think they might have prioritized star power over the right performance. It’s a good reminder that a big name doesn’t always equal the best casting choice.
Steven Yeun, famous for his role in The Walking Dead, leads the voice cast of Invincible, which also features many recognizable actors from popular films and TV shows. The cast includes stars from Marvel and Star Wars, and that’s just a glimpse of the talent involved. While some of these actors are better known for on-screen work, they’ve all delivered fantastic performances bringing Robert Kirkman’s comic book to life. Many have even surprised those who doubted their casting, though not everyone was initially convinced.
Lee Pace as Grand Regent Thragg Is ‘Invincible’s First Bad Casting

Lee Pace is well-known to Apple TV+ viewers for his role as Brother Day in Foundation. The show, based on Isaac Asimov’s science fiction novels, has been a great platform for Pace since its debut in 2021. He’s also proven his ability to handle large-scale projects with roles like Ronan the Accuser in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Evan McCone in the upcoming Running Man film. However, he doesn’t quite fit the part of Thragg in the Invincible animated series. I wasn’t familiar with the Invincible comics, so I didn’t have any preconceived ideas about how the character should sound.
There was some debate when Jeffrey Dean Morgan first appeared as Conquest in Season 4, which I initially found odd since comics are a visual medium. However, I now understand the concerns. While I didn’t have a problem with the Conquest casting, there’s a clear mismatch between Thragg’s imposing appearance and the way Robert Patrick’s voice sounds. Given how fantastic the voice acting has been throughout Invincible, I truly believe Thragg is the first character with a miscast voice actor. It’s not a criticism of Robert Patrick – he’s a great actor – but Thragg simply needed a different voice.
At Least Lee Pace’s ‘Invincible’ Casting Is a Nice Easter Egg

Though not officially the emperor by birthright, Thragg effectively leads the Viltrumites after Emperor Argall’s death, stepping in as Grand Regent until a true heir emerges. This adds a fascinating layer to the ‘Invincible’ story, and actor Walton Goggins’ portrayal brings a unique depth to the character. This is largely thanks to Goggins’ work on ‘Foundation,’ where he plays multiple interconnected roles, most notably as Brother Day.
In the Foundation series (specifically the show), Lee Pace plays multiple versions of the same character: Emperor Cleon I and his cloned descendants. This isn’t part of Isaac Asimov’s original books, but it’s a clever addition to the TV adaptation. The show reveals that while Cleon II and later emperors appear to be in charge of the Galactic Empire, they’re mostly symbolic. The real power lies with Cleon I’s original heir, who manipulates events from behind the scenes. This means both Thragg and Brother Day are essentially ruling over an empire they don’t truly control. The similarity is striking, and it makes me think it might have been the main reason Pace was chosen for the role in Invincible.
