Charlie Brooker, the brainchild behind “Black Mirror”, shares insights into crafting the follow-up episode for ‘USS Callister’.
As a gamer, I’m super pumped for the finale of season 7! It’s going to be an epic 88-minute ride with the title ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’, a revisit to the Star Trek-inspired universe we first dived into back in season 4. Can’t wait to set sail again!
As I sat down to chat with Deadline, Brooker shared some insight into the rollercoaster ride our sequel concept took before becoming what it is today.
He mentioned that out of all the stories we’ve produced, ‘USS Callister’ concluded in a way that made it feel like we were intentionally laying the groundwork for a follow-up.
Despite going through multiple forms, we ultimately expanded it into a full-length episode within the season. It proved quite challenging to finalize it; we faced hurdles such as the pandemic, writers’ strike, and coordinating everyone’s schedules, which felt like solving a Rubik’s cube while balancing on a unicycle.

Additionally, Brooker mentioned to the press that following the release of season 4, the creators of Black Mirror discussed potential options for the ‘USS Callister’ sequel, such as a single film or a mini-series with a limited number of episodes.
Additionally, he took great pleasure in penning stories for the familiar characters once more, an opportunity that doesn’t come along frequently for him. However, there was one unique circumstance.
“The character I have written for most consistently is Philomena Cunk,” he said.

As a gamer, I’m super excited that most of the crew from ‘USS Callister’ are returning for the follow-up! However, it’s a bummer that Michaela Coel and Jesse Plemons won’t be joining us this time around. You see, their characters, unfortunately, bit the dust in the first series.
Additionally, other actors gracing the screens for this upcoming season are Peter Capaldi, Issa Rae, Paul Giamatti, Emma Corrin, Rashida Jones, Chris O’Dowd, Harriet Walter, and Will Poulter, who will portray a new character distinct from his role in ‘Bandersnatch’.
The seventh season of Black Mirror is set to debut on Netflix on April 10, with seasons one through six already streaming on the platform.
