The musical “Wicked” draws inspiration from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,” which itself is based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” as well as its 1939 movie adaptation.

This story functions as a precursor to “The Wizard of Oz,” offering insights into events preceding Dorothy’s arrival and focusing on the once-close bond between characters Elphaba and Glinda.

In summary, the initial stage performance on Broadway garnered a grand total of three Tonys and seven Drama Desk Awards. Additionally, its first release as an album was honored with a Grammy Award.
