Real reason Justin Bieber couldn’t play his old music in full after he was ‘paid $10million to skip through songs on a laptop’ during headline Coachella set

Fans were disappointed with Justin Bieber’s return to the stage at Coachella on Saturday, with many calling his performance the worst in the festival’s history.

The 32-year-old singer reportedly earned $10 million to perform at the festival, but his performance was disappointing. He spent much of the set singing songs he found and played from a laptop.

Wearing a casual hoodie and shorts, Justin performed many of his newer songs, and quickly played snippets of his biggest hits, including “Baby,” “Favorite Girl,” “Beauty and a Beat,” “Never Say Never,” and “Confident.”

The reason Justin couldn’t perform his older songs has now come to light: he sold the rights to all of his music back in December 2022.

The popular Canadian musician recently sold the rights to his music for more than $200 million to Hipgnosis Songs Capital, a company backed by Blackstone. This sale may explain his strong dedication to creating new music.

When the deal was made, Justin Bieber had already released six studio albums and a large number of singles. He’d also collaborated with popular artists like Ludacris, Nicki Minaj, and Jaden Smith.

Justin Bieber rose to fame as a teenager with his 2010 hit song, “Baby,” and by last year, he had sold over 150 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time.

In 2025, Justin released two albums, titled Swag and Swag II. These albums included popular tracks like “Daisies,” “Yukon,” and “All I Can Take.”

According to TMZ, the pop star earned between $500 million and $1 billion throughout his career, but later spent it all and faced financial difficulties before deciding to sell the rights to his songs.

In 2022, reports suggested Justin was facing serious financial difficulties, potentially even bankruptcy. This led him to sell the rights to his music catalog by the end of the year.

Sources say Justin’s manager, Scooter Braun, advised against selling his masters so early in his career, suggesting he wait until January 2023 for potential tax benefits. However, Justin decided to proceed with the sale in December 2022 instead of waiting.

Justin is still the youngest musician to ever sell the rights to his songs, and reports suggest he was facing serious money problems when he made the deal.

DailyMail.com contacted representatives for Justin Bieber for a statement, but they declined to comment.

Last year, Hailey Bieber sold her skincare company, Rhode, for a huge $1 billion.

Okay, so, like, I’ve been following her since the beginning, and it’s just amazing to see how far she’s come! She started her own company almost three years ago, back in June 2022, and now E.l.f. Cosmetics is buying it! But don’t worry, she’s not leaving! She’s still going to be the face of the brand, and she’ll be in charge of all the creative stuff and lead the innovation team. Seriously, I’m so proud of her, it’s incredible!

Hailey shared her thoughts on Instagram about the partnership and thanked everyone for their support of Rhode.

When I started Rhode in 2022, my biggest goal was to expand the brand internationally and make it accessible to as many people as possible. That’s still my top priority.

I’m thrilled to share that Rhode is partnering with e.l.f. Beauty as we move forward!

I’ve connected with someone who shares my passion for innovation and building a truly unique company. They have the same big ideas as I do and will be a valuable partner in growing our brand.

During Justin’s Coachella set he gave a touching shoutout to wife Hailey and their son Jack.

During a simple performance of his song “Everything Hallelujah,” the crowd erupted when he unexpectedly sang, “Hailey, babe, hallelujah / baby Jack, hallelujah” during the second chorus.

The performance was broadcast live online, and a fan captured a short, heartwarming clip and shared it on X.

Bathed in red light and dressed casually in a zip-up sweatshirt, Justin sang to his wife, who he’d been married to for almost eight years.

The longtime couple welcomed son Jack Blues Bieber, 20 months, in August 2024.

After he name dropped Hailey, a camera flashed to the model, who blushed, smiled, and blew a kiss.

To show her support before her husband’s performance, she posted a photo on Instagram wearing a thong bikini and a T-shirt that said ‘Future Mrs. Bieber’.

I noticed one influencer shared a really up-close photo on her feed – it was a pair of bright blue basketball shorts with ‘Bieber’ printed on them in yellow. It’s interesting to see how everyday items can become a talking point online!

Fans are playfully calling this year’s Coachella festival ‘Bieberchella’ because of Justin Bieber’s highly anticipated return to the stage.

The hitmaker previously cancelled his Justice world tour in 2022 for health reasons.

Last summer, Justin Bieber unexpectedly released his seventh studio album, ‘Swag,’ which received positive reviews on July 11th. Only a few weeks later, on September 5th, he followed it up with a deluxe version called ‘Swag II’.

Sabrina Carpenter kicked off Coachella’s first night with a standout performance, captivating the crowd with four different outfits and a mix of her popular songs like “Juno,” “Espresso,” and “Goodbye.”

After the first weekend of the festival, viagogo, a major ticket marketplace, reported that Sabrina Carpenter was the most searched artist for tickets, with fans looking for her tickets 23 times more often than for Justin Bieber.

It comes as the Biebers have wielded their star power with back-to-back business collaborations.

The couple recently launched a fashion line they designed together as part of the performer’s new brand, SKYLRK.

Fans can buy the pimple patches created by the couple on April 13th through Hailey’s skincare company, Rhode, which is valued at a billion dollars.

The Yukon hitmaker has made history as the highest paid Coachella Festival act ever.

He surpassed Beyoncé with his eight-figure payout, which totaled more than $10M.

And he negotiated directly with Goldenvoice, the festival’s promoter.

A source told Rolling Stone last September that this was an unprecedented step for a leading artist, and that the singer achieved it independently.

With a headlining performance at Coachella and the popularity of his recent work, it’s obvious Justin is entering a really promising period in his career – one where he’s taking full control.

Insiders said his fee surpasses $5 million per weekend.

Because Justin Bieber is a skilled negotiator, he’s keeping all the profits from the deal himself, which significantly increases his earnings.

Okay, so Coachella never tells anyone how much they pay the artists, which is SO frustrating! But I’ve been digging around, and apparently, according to the Trapital Podcast, huge stars like Bad Bunny and Ariana Grande have made anywhere from $5 to $8 million just for performing there! Can you believe it?! It’s insane, but honestly, they deserve it, right? I just wish Coachella would be transparent about it!
