Jon Bernthal, known for playing The Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently shared his thoughts on the character as he prepares to reprise the role in several upcoming projects. He first played Frank Castle over ten years ago in Season 2 of Daredevil, which led to his own two-season series, The Punisher. Now, the actor, also famous for The Walking Dead, is bringing the vigilante back in Daredevil: Born Again, a one-hour Disney+ special called The Punisher: One Last Kill, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Garth Ennis’s acclaimed 12-issue comic book series, The Punisher: Welcome Back, Frank, originally published in 2000, has been re-released as part of the Marvel Premier Collection. To mark the occasion, Jon Bernthal, who famously played the Punisher, wrote a foreword sharing his thoughts on the character and how playing him helped him become a “better man.” He reflected on the role over a decade after first taking it on.
Frank Castle isn’t a traditional hero. He’s a man who suffered a terrible loss – his entire family. Driven by a burning need for revenge, he stops at nothing to get it. He’s incredibly determined and unbreakable, and I admit there’s a part of me that understands that raw, basic drive.
Honestly, getting to play this character has been incredible. It’s been so rewarding to tap into that raw power and determination, especially knowing it’s all driven by a deeper purpose and overcoming real pain. It’s actually made me think a lot about my own life, and I truly believe it’s helped me grow as a person – I feel like a better dad, a better husband, and just a better man overall.
As a big fan of the MCU, I was really interested to hear the actor talk about Frank Castle, the Punisher. It turns out he’s a huge figure, especially for veterans and first responders – and it makes total sense why they connect with his story so deeply.
From the moment I started playing Frank, people in the military and emergency services showed me how much this character means to them. I quickly realized why he connected with them so strongly. Frank represents the best qualities of these brave men and women – his dedication, strong moral compass, and unwavering commitment to finishing the job. These are the same qualities that define those who protect our freedom, and they’re at the heart of who Frank is. The community deeply understands Frank because his values reflect their own real-life experiences. But the more I’ve gotten to know Frank, the more I’ve realized that what draws this community to him also appeals to a fundamental part of all of us.
Bernthal declared that “there’s a little bit of Frank in all of us:”
As a movie lover, what really gets to me about Frank is that his strength doesn’t come from believing in big organizations or systems. It’s much more personal – it’s rooted in the love for his family and everything they went through together. That honesty, that unwillingness to shy away from difficult realities, and his unwavering dedication… it’s something I think we all connect with. I see my own parents in him, fiercely protecting their family. Anyone who’s ever grieved and turned that pain into something positive will see themselves in Frank, too. Honestly, I think anyone who’s ever tried to do the right thing, no matter how big or small, will recognize a little bit of themselves in him. We’ve all carried burdens that felt unbearable, and we’ve all had to find the courage to keep going. That’s what makes Frank so relatable – there’s a piece of him in all of us.
This year, the actor best known for playing the Punisher is also co-writing a special for Disney+ called The Punisher: One Last Kill. He recently complimented Gareth Ennis’ Welcome Back, Frank, saying it cleverly challenges typical superhero stories.
As both an actor and now a writer, I’ve always been fascinated by how Garth Ennis portrays Frank. Ennis doesn’t shy away from Frank’s flaws; instead, he challenges traditional hero stories by embracing the darker, more complex aspects of heroism, and finding authenticity in moments of desperation and rage.
‘Welcome Back, Frank’ isn’t about liking Frank; it’s about truly seeing him, even the difficult parts, without looking away. The film challenges you to understand what drives Frank and connect with that same deep-seated passion within yourself, allowing you to empathize with his journey. Ennis skillfully taps into that part of us that’s willing to go to any length for something we believe in, making the film a raw and honest exploration of conviction.
The co-writer, star, and producer of One Last Kill shared how honored he was to add to the story of Frank.
When working on the upcoming Punisher special for Marvel Television, I really focused on staying true to the core of the character. I had the chance to not only play Frank Castle again, but also to contribute to his story. Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon created a character who is driven by a clear purpose and unwavering dedication, someone who turns grief into action with raw honesty. That combination of strength and vulnerability is what makes Frank so compelling, and it’s what I strive to capture in every portrayal, whether I’m acting or writing.
I’m incredibly thankful to the creators of this character and for the chance to portray him. It’s been a real honor to play Frank Castle, not for my own benefit, but because he resonates so deeply with so many fans.
Marvel just released the first trailer for The Punisher: One Last Kill, which will be available on Disney+ starting May 12th. Fans won’t have to wait long to see Frank Castle again – he’ll also be in Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31st. This will be his first time appearing in a movie in over 20 years, and the first time with Jon Bernthal reprising his role under the Marvel Studios banner.
Why Jon Bernthal Is Exactly What The Punisher Needs

Jon Bernthal has always been very dedicated to the Punisher character. He felt strongly about protecting Frank Castle, which is why he was initially reluctant to rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He even turned down an appearance in the Daredevil: Born Again series until changes were made to ensure the character would be treated well.
As a huge fan of the Punisher, I was honestly worried when I heard he might be softened for a wider audience in a typical Marvel movie. A lot of us were afraid they’d lose what makes Castle, well, Castle! But thankfully, Jon Bernthal recently reassured everyone that he’s not going to be too watered down when he finally appears in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is a huge relief.
Punisher fans are fortunate to have Jon Bernthal playing Frank Castle. Like Ryan Reynolds with Deadpool, Bernthal is deeply committed to the character and actively involved in shaping how he evolves. This dedication will help keep Castle consistent, even with different projects and writers involved.
You know, I was surprised to hear Jon Bernthal originally passed on Born Again. But it really shows how much he cares about getting the Punisher right – it’s clearly not about a paycheck or chasing big roles for him. As a fan, that’s incredibly reassuring! It means whatever he does next, even after Brand New Day, will be something he truly believes in, and that’s exciting. We don’t know what’s coming, but I trust him to make good choices.
