Quentin Tarantino’s Western Masterpiece Django Unchained Is a Streaming Hit 14 Years Later

Few things are as predictable as death, taxes, and the debates surrounding Quentin Tarantino. While his latest work has sparked discussion, as his films often do, Tarantino remains a dominant force in filmmaking, a fact he powerfully demonstrated again in 2012.

This film is the ninth in a planned series of ten, and boasts a remarkable cast including award-winning actors like Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, and Samuel L. Jackson, alongside other highly acclaimed performers such as Kerry Washington, Jonah Hill, and Walton Goggins – a truly impressive group of stars.

Despite causing controversy upon its release, Django Unchained is now widely considered a cinematic masterpiece. Its popularity continues today, with the film becoming one of the most-streamed titles at the start of 2026, quickly reaching the top 10 on platforms like Paramount+, HBO Max, and Apple TV.

The movie centers on Django, a slave played by Jamie Foxx, who is freed with the assistance of bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz, played by Christoph Waltz. In return for his freedom, Django becomes Schultz’s apprentice.

Django Unchained Is About Love Overpowering Hate

The story became even more emotionally charged—already fueled by the desire for revenge against those who enslaved Django and other African-Americans—when Django finally found his wife, Broomhilda, at Candyland, the plantation owned by the cruel Monsieur Calvin Candie.

Jamie Foxx explained to the New York Amsterdam News that what initially attracted him to Django Unchained was the central love story between Django and Broomhilda, portrayed beautifully and powerfully by Kerry Washington. He felt that Django’s unwavering dedication to finding the woman he loved was the most compelling aspect of the film. ‘That’s powerful, that’s Django,’ he said.

The story follows his quest to rescue her, and the actors’ performances are so iconic that people still talk about and share them online today.

Jamie Foxx Fought to Be Django: ‘I Wasn’t Offered’

Despite costing $100 million to make, Django Unchained was a huge success, earning over $425 million worldwide in theaters. It also brought in tens of millions more from streaming, received high praise from both critics and audiences (earning a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes), and was nominated for and won numerous awards.

Jamie Foxx revealed he wasn’t initially offered the part in Django Unchained. He found out about the opportunity after other actors had already declined it, and he really had to push to be considered. He was determined to be in a Quentin Tarantino film, and the high quality of the project and its team reassured him he’d be working with great people.

He truly was exceptional, but Jamie Foxx’s powerful performance as Django – a man seeking justified revenge who evolves into a hero, all driven by love – shouldn’t be overlooked. It’s no surprise audiences have always loved Django Unchained, and it’s currently topping streaming charts once again.
