His ex-wife Joanne Whalley’s daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, disclosed that he had died due to pneumonia in Los Angeles on a Tuesday.

In 2014, the screen icon was diagnosed with throat cancer and underwent an operation that included a tracheotomy, affecting his speaking abilities considerably. Later, he was confirmed cancer-free.

Kilmer gained fame for playing Iceman in the blockbuster movie Top Gun (1986) and Batman/Bruce Wayne in Batman Forever (1995). Despite his voice being permanently affected, he briefly reappeared on screen in the 2022 release, Top Gun: Maverick.

He also famously played musician Jim Morrison in the 1991 film The Doors.

Besides Mercedes, aged 33, he is also mourned by his son Jack Kilmer, who is 29 years old. Jack Kilmer was married to their mother Joanne from 1988 until the year 1996.
