Actor Willa Fitzgerald, who plays Reacher in a different role, has been added to the cast alongside Russell Crowe for the espionage thriller titled “Billion Dollar Spy.
As reported by Deadline, it’s been announced that both Fitzgerald (previously seen as Roscoe Conklin in the initial season of the Amazon Prime Video series) and Crowe are set to star together in an upcoming movie. This film, scheduled for release, is expected to be set during the Cold War era, with Harry Lawtey also joining the cast.
According to David E Hoffman’s 2015 book titled “The Billion Dollar Spy: A True Story of Cold War Espionage and Betrayal“, the movie narrates the account of Adolf Tolkachev, a Russian native who secretly worked as an informant for the CIA during the Cold War.
In a new casting development, Crowe assumes the character of Tolkachev, a Soviet Union electronics engineer in his previous profession. On the other hand, Lawtey, known for his roles in ‘Industry’ and ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’, will portray Tom Lenihan, Tolkachev’s CIA supervisor. Lastly, Fitzgerald steps into the role of Lenihan’s wife.
Stephen Gaghan, who received an Academy Award in 2001 for his screenplay work on the film “Traffic,” has been said to have penned the most recent draft of the script. Amma Asante, renowned for her directorial work on “Belle” and “A United Kingdom,” is attached to helm this project.
In the tense atmosphere of the final years of the Cold War, the story in Billion Dollar Spy unfolds. It revolves around Adolf Tolkachev, a man who puts his life on the line to share thousands of classified Soviet intelligence documents with the United States.
Against all odds and numerous setbacks from a cautious CIA, I never gave up, reflecting the bravery needed to challenge a system that had betrayed its own populace. In the end, I found an advocate in CIA agent Tom Lenihan, enabling me to tip the scales of power.
The tale of Tolkachev is particularly relatable during a time where defiance and courage hold significant importance, as his story portrays an ordinary individual who, through his exceptional valor, became the Pentagon’s most invaluable secret agent.
Actress Fitzgerald, fresh from roles in “Strange Darling” and “Wildcat”, took to Instagram to share her enthusiasm for an upcoming project, stating: “Can’t wait to immerse myself in this tale, which seems increasingly timely with each passing day.
