Long-awaited horror sequel gets a devastating update: “It went away”

The highly anticipated third installment of the “Happy Death Day” series, previously mentioned by writer Christopher Landon, has unfortunately received some disappointing news.

The franchise kicks off from the initial 2017 film, and it revolves around a university student who keeps re-living the day she was murdered and takes it upon herself to identify and apprehend her assassin.

The slasher movie turned out to be a massive success, and it was subsequently followed by the 2019 release of “Happy Death Day 2U.” Ever since then, enthusiastic fans have been eagerly waiting for another sequel to materialize.

Regarding the third movie, unfortunately, Landon (the director) has revealed that plans for it have stalled. He mentioned that although there was an intention to produce it, the project seems to have been put on hold or cancelled, as he said it “faded away”.

He explained to SFX magazine that he hadn’t written the script yet because he prefers not to make plans based on uncertain outcomes, fearing he might get overly optimistic. However, he was prepared and eager to write it, but then he felt a strange hesitation about proceeding with the task.

Landon disclosed that there were numerous pauses and bursts of enthusiasm, hinting at a possible plan but never fully committing, and at one stage, a TV series was even suggested.

Initially, there was a discussion about transforming it into a three-part series for streaming service Peacock, which struck him as peculiar. He recounted, “I shrugged and said, ‘Okay, whatever!’ But after that conversation, the idea seemed to vanish and we never talked about it again – that was quite some time ago.

Landon remarked: “The experience has been intriguing since both films turned out to be financially prosperous. This seems to have left us, along with many spectators, puzzled as to the reason behind our inability to produce a third installment.

However, I don’t hold the financial reins or make the decisions about this. That power lies solely with Blumhouse and Universal; whether they wish to proceed depends on their willingness or desire for it.

It wasn’t the first occasion where Landon’s dreams for a third movie faced disappointment; the author hinted in 2023 that the relatively poor box office earnings of “Happy Death Day 2U” could have potentially hindered those plans.
