Selena’s killer is up for parole 30 years after shooting Latin superstar

On the eve of the 30th anniversary of Tejano music legend Selena Quintanilla-Perez’s death, the woman who fatally shot her will be eligible for parole.

64-year-old Yolanda Saldívar has been imprisoned for three decades following her first-degree murder conviction, which occurred in 1995. At a Days Inn hotel in Corpus Christi, Texas, she shot the singer after allegations of embezzlement from Saldívar were brought forth by Quintanilla-Perez.

According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s online records, Saldívar is now incarcerated at the Patrick L. O’Daniel Unit in Gatesville and has a pending request for parole that will be reviewed by the parole board this coming Sunday.

In Texas, the parole procedure entails an extensive examination, which includes discussions and assessments concerning the individual’s conduct during imprisonment and any potential effects on the community should they be freed. If parole is refused, Saldívar’s case will be reassessed within a span of one to five years.

Previously serving District Attorney of Nueces County, Carlos Valdez, who oversaw the trial against Saldívar, has voiced apprehensions regarding her release, considering the gravity of the offense and the possible dangers she might present to community security.

Valdez stated to KHOU11 news in Houston, “I have no idea what might transpire if she’s freed.” He further expressed his belief that it could potentially be a grave error to approve her parole. In his opinion, he truly feels that Yolanda would likely be safer where she currently is.

Quintanilla-Perez retains a loyal following, with numerous fans passionately against Saldívar’s request for parole.

Instead of Saldívar’s family supporting her incarceration, they have argued for her freedom, explaining to the New York Post that the singer behaved very aggressively towards her, which triggered the escalation of their argument before the 1995 shooting incident.

In the confines of my prison life, I’ve encountered numerous threatening situations due to taking the life of a cherished artist. This has led me to be placed under protective custody, spending the majority of my days isolated within the four walls of my cell.
