Olympic Star Rebecca Adlington’s Shocking Health Revelation and Urgent Appeal to UK Government
On Wednesday, Rebecca Adlington disclosed that she has received a diagnosis for a condition that could significantly alter her life.
In a brief video, the 36-year-old Olympic swimmer appealed to the UK government, sharing that she suffers from coeliac disease.
In a video posted on Coeliac UK’s Instagram, she greeted everyone and mentioned that she had recently been diagnosed with celiac disease.
I’ve discovered, without a doubt, that gluten-free prescriptions play a crucial role in managing this condition, and I’ve picked up on it quite swiftly.
However, in certain regions, these prescriptions are being completely eliminated. To ensure our voices are heard, Coeliac UK is presenting a petition to Number 10. If you would like to support this cause, please take a moment to sign and share the petition today.
In simple terms, Coeliac disease is a health issue where the body mistakenly identifies its own healthy cells as foreign. To protect itself, the body produces special proteins called antibodies against these cells.

For individuals with celiac disease, the presence of gluten in their bodies prompts an immune reaction instead.
Throughout this phase, the body produces antibodies that harm the inner layer of their digestive tract, leading to a range of uncomfortable symptoms, not all of which are confined to the abdomen.
Coeliac UK announced that they stopped their petition once it gathered 22,826 signatures.
On March 19th, a Wednesday, we personally submitted our petition to 10 Downing Street, making our demand for action known to the UK government.
The petition, backed by people throughout the United Kingdom, emphasized the significance of preserving the availability of gluten-free prescriptions for individuals suffering from coeliac disease, especially those who are economically disadvantaged.
Among the participants who submitted their work, there were individuals who personally witnessed the withdrawal of support in their communities.
Kate Powell, a mother of two girls with celiac disease, hails from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. In early 2024, services for people like her were discontinued in that region. Earlier this year, however, volunteer Ceira Reading noticed similar services being withdrawn in her area of Leicestershire.
They went on to say: ‘We were honored to have supportive politicians like Baroness Bakewell of Hardington Mandeville, Tom Rutland MP, Sharon Hodgson MP, and Amanda Hack MP join us on the well-known steps of 10 Downing Street. Together, we advocated for equal access to prescription for gluten-free products.’

The final part of the post read: ‘We are extremely grateful to each person who added their name to the petition, propelling this vital issue forward, as well as everyone who aided our campaign, particularly the remarkable Rebecca Adlington, for her outstanding support.’
Recently, Rebecca confided that she lost affection for her body due to the emotional turmoil caused by experiencing two miscarriages.
The former Olympic swimmer lost a child at 12 weeks in August 2022.
Approximately a year ago, she experienced the loss of her unborn child, Harper, at the 20-week mark. This unfortunate event required an induced labor that led to a stillbirth.
Currently, Rebecca has confessed that she found herself stuck in a routine or slump (commonly referred to as a ‘rut’) during a challenging phase of her life, which led her to temporarily distance herself from fitness activities.
The athlete shared with OK! Magazine that for approximately two years, they had abstained from visiting the gym altogether.
After experiencing my miscarriage, I found myself slipping into a stage where I lost affection for my body. It became a feeling of disdain, almost as if to say, “I can’t stand it.
She attributed her healing process to regular counseling sessions with her husband, Andy Parsons, and also shared that she now participates in gym classes, Pilates, and swimming for physical fitness and mental wellness.
Rebecca, mother of nine-year-old Summer with her former spouse Harry Needs, and three-year-old Albie with her current partner Andy Parsons, mentioned: ‘On Sundays, I go swimming, but I wouldn’t categorize it as a form of physical activity.’
‘I feel like Sunday’s swim is more for my mental health than anything else.
‘I don’t have my phone attached to me, I don’t go fast or anything like that.
‘I take this time for myself to daydream and unwind, free from interruptions like children asking for help or people making demands on me.’
After a few months, Rebecca acknowledged that couples therapy was instrumental in helping her and her partner come to terms with the heartbreaking event and navigate the gloomy phase of their mourning.

In September, the athlete shared some of the touching ways her family has paid tribute to Harper.
‘We have a cherry blossom tree at home, there are her small handprints on the living room wall that belong to our daughter, and Albie and Summer often say, “Harper is my sister,” she confirmed on the talk show Loose Women.’
Last week during our vacation in Greece, we stumbled upon a small chapel, and despite the festive atmosphere, a candle was lit in memory of Harper.
In simpler terms, “She is one of us forever; we can talk about her without being overwhelmed by tears right now.
