Happy Valley’s James Norton lands next lead TV role in Adolescence writer’s new drama
Actor James Norton, known for his work on “Happy Valley,” has secured his next television part in the series “Wavewalker: Breaking Free,” which is based on Suzanne Heywood’s popular memoir.
In the writing style of Jack Thorne from the novel “Adolescence,” Wavewalker recounts the tale of Heywood, who as a 7-year-old was embarked on a global sailing voyage by her parents. This challenging expedition unexpectedly spanned over a decade.
At a masterclass during Series Mania, Norton personally disclosed that his own production company, Rabbit Track, is involved in creating the upcoming series. He also shared that he will portray the character of Heywood’s father in the show (as reported by Deadline).

Originally, the idea for this journey, which this dashing father depicted so vividly, was supposed to last a year or two. However, as it turned out, it took approximately 10 years instead, he disclosed.
The father forced the two kids to work as crew members on his boat, effectively depriving them of their childhood and education.
He went on to say: “It’s all about the uphill battle for existence and knowledge, pitting a deeply loving yet formidable father against the harsh treatment he inflicts upon his beloved daughters.
Kitty Kaletsky, co-owner of Rabbit Track with Norton, revealed more about the tale, explaining: “In the 1970s, my father announced, ‘We’ve sold the house, everyone. I’ve purchased a boat and we’re going to set sail on a global voyage, mimicking Captain Cook’s expedition.’
This individual serves as both a profoundly inspiring, charismatic, imaginative, and delightful figure – the kind of father one might aspire to have if seeking a life akin to that in “Swallows and Amazons” – yet beneath this facade lies a highly narcissistic and self-absorbed person, whose actions can be toxic.
Regarding Thorne penning the script, Norton found it “extremely thrilling” considering the show is being developed into a four-part series much like the writer’s successful Netflix drama titled “Adolescence“, while Kaletsky stated that Thorne has crafted an “exceptionally fantastic pilot”.
More specifics about the cast members for Wavewalker and its planned start date are still undisclosed at this time.
Additionally, it has been announced that Norton is set to appear in the forthcoming film titled “Wife & Dog“, starring Cosmo Jarvis, Paddy Considine, and Pip Torrens, along with Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike, and Anthony Hopkins.
Wavewalker: Breaking Free doesn’t have a release date yet.
