Maria Shriver Reveals Heart-Wrenching Truth About Life After Arnold’s Betrayal
Maria Shriver openly discussed the heart-wrenching consequences that followed her separation from Arnold Schwarzenegger, after his shocking admission had a significant impact.
In the year 2011, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was married to Maria Shriver at that time, confessed to having fathered a child with their former housekeeper, Mildred Baena, during their marriage. Their son, Joseph Baena, was born in 1997, and it wasn’t until years later that Shriver found out he was her husband’s offspring. As of now, Joseph is 27 years old.
After confessing to his infidelity and fathering a child, Shriver, aged 69, eventually parted ways with Schwarzenegger, who is 77 years old. However, their official divorce wasn’t finalized until several years had passed.
Shriver has just published a collection of poems titled “I Am Maria,” and an extract shared by People showcases the breadth of her emotional turmoil following a betrayal, as she works towards healing her wounded heart.
The woman who got married to Schwarzenegger in 1986, and had children Katherine (aged 31), Patrick, Christina (both aged 33), and Christopher (aged 27) with him, described their separation as a ‘severe’ and ‘significantly transformative event.’
Shortly after the passing of her mother, Eunice Shriver (in 2009), and then her father, Sargent Shriver (in 2011), a significant event occurred in Shriver’s life.

After giving up her position as First Lady of California when her husband’s term ended, Shriver stated that the news shattered any remaining parts of her.
Approximately a year and a half passed, and everything seemed to fall apart. My tenure as First Lady concluded. My father passed away. To make matters worse, another catastrophic event occurred: my 25-year marriage crumbled. This shattered my heart, crushed my spirit, and left little of me intact.
She said, “The foundations of my longstanding denial crumbled when I realized that without my marriage, my family, and my job. It was as if the dam holding back all those truths finally broke.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I couldn’t help but admire my children’s resilience when our world was unexpectedly shaken by a betrayal, forcing us to rebuild our lives from scratch. This experience left me questioning my own identity and strength, yet watching them exhibit grace, valor, and courage in the face of adversity filled me with immense pride.
I was overwhelmed by deep sorrow, turmoil, rage, dread, melancholy, and apprehension. I found myself questioning my identity and sense of belonging. Truthfully, it was a harsh and terrifying experience.
In the dimness of my hotel room, with no one but myself for company as tears flowed freely, I found myself reflecting: ‘Maria, there’s no need for this to mark the end of you.’
Afterward, I embarked on a quest for recovery, visiting various healers such as therapists, shamans, and psychics. My path also led me to spend time at a secluded monastery.
Or, in another way:
Following that, I ventured into finding healing by consulting with therapists, shamans, and psychics, and spending time at a tranquil convent.

Instead of burdening you with the extensive account of my sadness-focused gathering or overwhelming you with an endless list of my visits to diverse counselors, healers, spiritual guides, and fortune-tellers, I’ll keep it concise.
While at the convent, she was comforted by a nun with wise words and a hug.
I traveled all the way across the country to a secluded convent. As my visit drew to a close, Mother Dolores pulled me aside for a private conversation that seemed reminiscent of a scene from The Sound of Music. She said to me, “Maria, it’s clear you enjoy your time here. However, I must make it clear that, although the atmosphere appeals to you, living with us is not an option. Our age limit for new residents is fifty, and unfortunately, you are fifty-five years old.
In a heartfelt moment, she confided in me, ‘I believe deep down, you’re yearning for the freedom to depart from your marriage, to become Maria.’ As we embraced, tears streamed down our faces.
For Shriver, poetry turned out to be an essential component in her recovery toolbox, offering her the catharsis she yearned for following a lifetime of striving to meet lofty standards and bottling up feelings.
In my work, I’ve been drawing from a profound part of myself. Through the medium of poetry, I discovered a woman who was petrified of failing to meet her family’s expectations—afraid she wouldn’t measure up as a daughter, sister, spouse, mom, and journalist.
I encountered a person who consistently compared herself to unattainable ideals, ensuring she would always feel inadequate. This individual had been evading emotional pain for a long time. Moreover, I discovered that when this accumulated grief and trauma is finally released, it floods out like a tsunami.

Back in 1986, I was starstruck when the legend that is Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver crossed paths for the very first time. Fast forward nearly nine years, and these two lovebirds decided to make it official. But alas, after three decades together, they went their separate ways in 2011. The final curtain call on their union was only recently drawn in 2021.
In a recent documentary titled “Arnold,” Arnold Schwarzenegger discussed the time when he confessed to Maria Shriver about his infidelity that occurred in 1996.
In a marriage counseling session back in 2011, the counselor mentioned, ‘Today, Maria has a particular question on her mind. She’s curious to know whether you are Joseph’s father.’
Previously, the ex-governor of California exclaimed, “I felt like my heart had paused. Afterward, I confessed the truth: ‘Maria, yes, Joseph is indeed my child.’ It was clear she was deeply affected by this revelation.
At first, he and Mildred believed the child might be Rogelio’s, and she carried on working for the Schwarzenegger family. However, as the child grew older, it gradually became evident to him.
In the documentary excerpt, Arnold said, “At that point, it became about figuring out, ‘What steps should we take to keep this confidential?’
In August 1977, the actor initially met Maria, who was the niece of the 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy, at a tennis event. Later, in 1985, they got engaged after Arnold proposed to Maria (Shriver) in his native Austria.
The ex-pair got married the next year, in 1986, at a heartfelt ceremony held at the Kennedy family residence in Massachusetts. They stated it was the most extravagant wedding they had ever attended and couldn’t hide their excitement, expressing that they felt incredibly fortunate and blessed in life.

Over the span of their 25-year long marriage, they had four children: Katherine, Christina, Patrick, and Joseph, with the latter two being born just a few days apart.
Concerning the situation, Arnold acknowledged it as his “most significant mistake” and expressed, “I’ve inflicted enough pain on my family due to my mistake. Everyone has had to endure the consequences. Maria, the children, Joseph, even his mother – they have all suffered.
After the affair, Maria Shriver, the star of True Lies, chose to leave Arnold Schwarzenegger. As a result, he took care of both her and their son by buying them a house with a swimming pool in California in 2010.
In 2011, the housekeeper retired, coinciding with the time when Maria and Arnold ended their relationship, leading to their split. They initiated a divorce in July of that year, but it wasn’t legally concluded until ten years later, in 2021.
In simpler terms, the former professional bodybuilder said, ‘My achievements and setbacks will both be remembered. My career had its share of failures, but this particular one was on a different level. Despite the sadness in our story, Maria and I managed to bring up our kids well.’
Over time, Schwarzenegger has cultivated a warm bond with his son, often enjoying workout sessions together and both attending his 2019 graduation ceremony at Pepperdine University alongside Mildred.
