BBC’s Birmingham-set coming-of-age drama gets first look

Glancing at the debut of the BBC’s gritty, Birmingham-based teenage drama titled “Just Act Normal“, we get a glimpse into its raw portrayal of urban, African-British adolescence that is unapologetically bold and authentic.

According to author Janice Okoh, a six-episode series, originally known as “We Go Again“, draws inspiration from her 2011 stage play titled “Three Birds“.

The story revolves around three siblings, namely Tiana, Tanika, and Tionne, who are concealing a shocking family truth. Actors Chenée Taylor, Kaydrah Walker-Wilkie, and Akins Subair portray these characters. In simpler terms, we’re focusing on the lives of Tiana, Tanika, and Tionne, as they grapple with a dark family secret, with Chenée Taylor, Kaydrah Walker-Wilkie, and Akins Subair taking on their roles.

While Tiana battles to maintain normalcy in their daily lives, Tionne copes with sorrow by other means, and Tanika pleads with her educator for guardianship. A turbulent situation arises when their mother’s unreliable drug supplier, Dr Feelgood, decides to reside with them.

Among those joining the production are stars like Romola Garai from “Vigil,” portraying a compassionate teacher named Ms. Jenkins; Sam Buchanan, known for “Sherwood,” taking on the role of Dr Feelgood; and Ivanno Jeremiah, famed for “Halo,” who will be playing Leo, the siblings’ father.

Additionally, you’ll find Jamelia, known from “Hollyoaks,” portraying a character called Fake Jackie, who steps in for the girls’ absent mother. Also, Jennifer Metcalfe from “Hollyoaks” is joining the cast as Leo’s upcoming partner named Candy.

It’s about everyday life in the working class, as well as aspirations born from this background. It possesses a deep, compassionate spirit, pulsating with warmth.
