Who Are Loewe’s New Designers?
After a week of speculation, it’s now confirmed that Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez have been appointed as co-creative directors for Loewe, starting from April 7. Previously based in New York, they will succeed the well-loved Jonathan Anderson. Although their names might not ring a bell for those outside the industry (for now), you’ve likely seen their designs on red carpets, street style photos, and iconic celebrities such as the Olsen twins and Chloë Sevigny.
2002 found me in my final year at Parsons, where Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, my fellow students, founded Proenza Schouler. Our thesis collection was an instant hit, with the entire line being snapped up by Barneys, a high-end retailer back then. In no time, Proenza Schouler became the epitome of sophistication amidst New York City’s fashion crowd, blending contemporary style without succumbing to fleeting trends.
As logomania raged, TikTok fueled Y2K nostalgia, and the market flooded with quiet luxury, we, the designers, stayed true to our vision. We focused on creating comfortably chic silhouettes, iconic bags, and distinctive footwear that resonated with people. Despite the rollercoaster of fashion, we remained steadfast in our sartorial approach, always prioritizing style over fleeting trends.
2008 saw the debut of the brand’s iconic PS1 bag, now a permanent fixture in the league of must-have bags, alongside design classics like the Balenciaga City, Louis Vuitton Speedy, and Jonathan Anderson’s ingenious Puzzle Bag. Almost two decades on, this messenger-style satchel, affectionately named after New York City’s school system, continues to captivate with its enduring, practical charm.
As we emerge from the pandemic haze, Anderson’s fashion line has been veering towards the fantastical and kitschy online realm. Some folks are saying that McCollough and Hernandez’s design philosophy, coupled with their strong celebrity connections, could be a winning commercial combo for us gamers.
As of now, there’s no confirmed successor at Proenza Schouler, but the original duo will continue to play significant roles in the brand’s management to uphold its New York heritage. Following the New York Fashion Week runways in February, the design team unveiled their first lookbook, photographed by Tim Elkaïm, indicating that operations carry on as normal.
