Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead Is Leaving Netflix

Zack Snyder’s first film as a director, a remake of the classic zombie movie Dawn of the Dead, came out in 2004. You can currently watch it on Netflix, but it will be removed at the end of the month.

Okay, horror fans, heads up! It looks like Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake is leaving streaming services on May 1st, 2026. It’s hard to believe it’s been 22 years since this fast-paced, incredibly successful film hit theaters – it made over $102 million on a budget of just $26 million! Beyond the box office numbers, this movie was a real launching pad for Snyder, with a script assist from James Gunn. Honestly, it’s become a cult classic, and many of us horror buffs still consider it one of the good remakes – it really holds up even today.

Dawn of the Dead Reimagines the George A. Romero Classic

Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead reimagines George Romero’s original film, though they share some common ground. Both stories take place in a shopping mall during a zombie outbreak, where groups of survivors try to rebuild their lives until the zombies break in. However, Snyder’s version features a different set of characters and faster, more agile zombies compared to the slower, traditional zombies in Romero’s movie.

I was really excited to see the cast they assembled for this remake! It’s packed with familiar faces – Sarah Polley, who I loved in John Adams, Ving Rhames of Pulp Fiction, Jake Weber from Hell on Wheels, and even Mekhi Phifer, you might remember him from I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Plus, you’ve got comedic talent like Ty Burrell (Modern Family) and Michael Kelly (House of Cards), alongside Kevin Zegers (Gossip Girl) and Michael Barry (Detroit Rock City). What’s really cool is they brought back some of the original Dawn of the Dead actors – Scott Reiniger, Tom Savini, and Ken Foree all make cameos, which was a fantastic touch for a longtime fan like me.

Zack Snyder Has Teased a Remastered Version

In 2024, marking the film’s 20th anniversary, Snyder said they held a screening about a week beforehand. He was thrilled to have the chance, but also noted the film could probably benefit from a remaster. He mentioned they might discuss the possibility with Universal.

Although Zack Snyder didn’t create a traditional sequel to Dawn of the Dead, he later returned to zombie horror with Army of the Dead. Released on Netflix in 2021, the film stars Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, and Omari Hardwick in a story about a casino heist gone wrong amidst a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas. Army of the Dead proved popular enough to launch a franchise, starting with the prequel Army of Thieves. While further installments were initially planned, those projects are no longer in development.

I was so excited to see that Dawn of the Dead is still on Netflix, but sadly it’s only available until May 1, 2026. Good news though – Army of the Dead is still up there, so I can watch that one whenever I want!
