‘One Piece’ co-showrunner Matt Owens steps down from show to focus on mental health

Matt Owens, who shares the role of showrunner for Netflix’s live-action version of “One Piece,” has chosen to leave the production.

On a recent social media update over the weekend, Owens expressed his decision to depart from the TV show temporarily, in order to prioritize his mental wellbeing.

Since the debut of the ‘One Piece’ manga series by Eiichiro Oda in 1999, over 1,000 episodes have been aired. We inquired the English voice actors about their preferred episodes.

Over the past six years of working on the live-action One Piece, it has been an extraordinary, life-altering voyage for me, as expressed on Instagram. A long-cherished dream realized. However, it’s also been a very challenging experience. Therefore, I’m deciding to disembark from the Going Merry temporarily to focus on my wellbeing and mental health. I want to express my deepest gratitude to Oda, Shueisha, Tomorrow Studios, Netflix, and the entire cast and crew for your faith, collaboration, and tireless efforts. For now, I’ll take a moment to rest, seek professional help, improve my skills in Marvel Rivals, and return rejuvenated for the exciting new journeys that lie ahead.

Together with co-writer Steven Maeda, Owens split the role of showrunner during the production of the series. The filming for the show’s second season was completed in February.
