Revelations ending explained: Who or what is the One-Eyed Monster?
Revelations spoilers follow.
In Yeon Sang-ho’s works, the fantastical aspects are typically straightforward, although the subjects he explores can be complex.
In the worlds that Yeon Sang-ho crafts, creatures like zombies from “Train to Busan,” individuals with superpowers in “Psychokinesis,” and judgmental demons in “Hellbound” feel incredibly real. However, for his newest Netflix project, the darkness stems more from reality itself, although it delves into the divine.
What to Read Next
The narrative of “Revelations” unfolds as a captivating mystery surrounding a missing person, with the investigation led by two distinct individuals: Pastor Sung Min-chan (Ryu Jun-yeol) and Detective Lee Yeon-hui (Shin Hyun-bin). Both are relentless in their pursuit of justice against Kwon Yang-rae (Shin Min-jae), a former convict who abducted and tormented Lee’s younger sister, Yeon-ju, in the past.
In a turn of events, while Yeon-ju managed to flee, Yang-rae was apprehended. However, due to the hardships he endured as a child, the judge showed leniency towards him. Overwhelmed by the pain from her past, Yeon-ju ultimately passed away, motivating Yeon-hui to pursue her police career and bring Yang-rae to justice for the loss of her sister.
One day, Yang-rae stumbles into Pastor Min-chan’s church, but since Min-chan isn’t familiar with any of it, he unsuccessfully attempts to recruit the former convict as a parish member. From then on, things take a turn for the worse when Min-chan learns his wife is being unfaithful and he misses out on a position at a swanky new church under construction nearby.
A disagreement about what seemed like Min-chan’s daughter being kidnapped results in a physical altercation between him and Yang-rae, which takes place on an isolated rural road. In the heat of their struggle, Yang-rae accidentally hits his head against a stone. Thinking that Yang-rae is dead, Min-chan panics and pushes his body off a nearby cliff to hide any connection to Yang-rae’s demise.
In that instant, what seemed like a divine revelation to the pastor verified for him that his actions were correct. However, it was later discovered that Yang-rae wasn’t deceased as initially thought; instead, he managed to make his way into a local nursing home.
Let’s delve deeper into this mystery together at Digital Spy, where we unravel the enigma that is the finale of Revelations and explore the secrets hidden within the One-Eyed Monster.
Revelations ending explained
By sheer chance – or as Min-chan claims, by a higher power’s guidance – the pastor accidentally encounters Yang-rae before he could inform the authorities about the incident. Instead, the pastor takes him to the location of the church under construction where they are establishing a new congregation.
In order to escape, Yang-rae confesses that he has kidnapped a new victim, A-yeong, and promises to disclose her location if Min-chan allows him to turn himself in to the authorities.
One could assume that a pastor would eagerly intervene, particularly when the child in question is part of his church community. However, Min-chan understands that reporting the situation would also implicate him, and it seems that this isn’t God’s will according to him.
As he hastens to join a vigil for A-yeong, illuminated by candles, Yeon-hui pursues Yang-rae. Her intention is to summon her co-workers, but as visions of her deceased sister appear, urging revenge, she ponders the idea of eliminating him instead. Yang-rae, in a smug manner, reminds her that such an action would lead to another life being taken, similar to her own sister. It’s at this moment that Min-chan reappears, knocking the detective unconscious.
Now, the pastor has devised a revised sacred scheme. This plan entails staging a violent confrontation between Yeon-hui and Yang-rae, whereby Yeon-hui is fatally shot and Yang-rae is cast out to meet his demise. The intention is to make it seem as if they perished during a struggle, thereby concealing the fact that Min-chan was present.
He doesn’t value A-yeong’s life since he truly thinks she’s deceased. In his view, God wouldn’t have led him to this plan if it weren’t true. By eliminating Yang-rae, Min-chan feels like he’s stopping further deaths at the same time. He disregards the murders he’s currently carrying out.
Fortunately, Yeon-hui skillfully avoids Min-chan as he attempts to fire at her. A scuffle ensues, yet the detective successfully subdues the pastor, a predictable outcome. Unfortunately, Yang-rae doesn’t fare well since the chair he’s bound to becomes entangled, causing him to fall from the building’s edge. Despite his previous actions towards her sister, Yeon-hui attempts to rescue him, but her efforts are in vain as she can’t lift him back up due to the chair dragging him down.
Before meeting his unfortunate end, the vile individual known as Yang-rae manages to reveal a crucial piece of information about A-yeong’s location: “The girl… the one-eyed beast devoured her.
Not only does the tension reach its peak in this critical scene, but Yeon Sang-ho chose to shoot a significant part of it as a single continuous shot. However, what you might find surprising is that this isn’t the finale; there are more unanswered questions following those last words, leaving us curious and intrigued.
Who or what is the One-Eyed Monster?
It’s highly likely that the one-eyed creature Yang-rae describes is not a literal monster, but rather a symbol of the emotional turmoil he’s experienced due to abuse from his stepfather or self-inflicted trauma. Interestingly, this traumatic memory appears to him not as a figment of imagination, but as a vision through an oculus window.
Every instance of encountering that distinct design element serves as a trigger for Yang-rae, causing him to perform increasingly disturbing actions. The memory of this feature brings back traumatic experiences from his childhood, when he was abused in a house with such a window. This painful past resurfaces each time he encounters a similar window throughout his adulthood.
In the apartment where her sibling resided, there was a window resembling a giant eyeball, much like a monster’s, similar to the one on the structure that once held A-yeong captive prior to his demise.
As I delve deeper into the matter, I receive valuable insights from the therapist who previously worked with Yang-rae. However, it wasn’t until my father unexpectedly phoned, voicing his concern over an oddity – a “one-eyed thing” – in the house he was renovating, that a light bulb went off, connecting the dots to A-yeong’s whereabouts.
After piecing together the clues, Yeon-hui successfully locates the building where A-yeong was being held captive, mere moments before it was set to be demolished, with the help of police resources. By rescuing A-yeong in this way, Yeon-hui manages to atone for her previous failure to save her own sister.
In conclusion, Yeon-hui goes to see Min-chan in prison and informs him that he had been mistaken – A-yeong is indeed alive. This revelation shatters our pastor’s beliefs because it challenges the idea that God was guiding Min-chan’s actions. Essentially, this implies that Min-chan bears full responsibility for his actions and the terrible sins he has committed.
Upon getting back to his cell, he spots some marks on the wall and discerns a figure of Jesus within them. This is just like Min-chan. With tears streaming down, he attempts to wipe off the stain using a damp cloth. Does this imply that he has lost faith in the divine messages he received? Or could it be that his belief in those messages has grown even stronger?
The movie, Revelations, intentionally leaves certain aspects unclear due to its recurring theme of ambiguity. Resolving this enigma directly would contradict the film’s essence. To clarify, the one-eyed monster isn’t like the zombies in Train to Busan or demons in Hellbound, existing in a concrete, tangible sense. However, there might be an exception… wink wink.
