Sabrina Carpenter faced criticism after she made fun of a fan who was yodeling during her first headlining performance at the Coachella music festival in Indio, California on Friday.
Fans lambasted the sassy 26-year-old singer as ‘rude’ and ‘ignorant’ and ‘mean,’ and even ‘nasty.’
Mary Carpenter was playing the keyboard during her show when she noticed someone in the audience making a strange sound, possibly reacting to a surprise guest – a performer who had been removed from the show previously – making an unexpected appearance.
During her performance, she paused and looked at someone in the audience, saying, ‘I think I just heard yodeling. Is that you? I don’t appreciate it,’ according to a video shared on X.
The fan shouted out that yodeling was ‘part of my culture’ and ‘a call for celebration.’
‘That’s your culture, yodeling?’ the Manchild hitmaker said with an incredulous tone to her voice.
She asked, confused, ‘Is this Burning Man? What is happening?’ Her question was followed by a quick laugh that didn’t sound genuine.
Carpenter finished her performance to a thrilled audience, delivering a memorable set featuring songs like Taste, Please Please Please, and We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night.
Following the performance, many fans expressed their disappointment online regarding how the performer treated the yodeler.
‘I was actually enjoying the show till this comment. It was really rude,’ one Reddit user bickered.
One Reddit user pointed out that the person in question actually said, ‘IT’S WEIRD,’ which they felt was incredibly disrespectful. Even after someone explained the fan’s comment related to their culture, the reaction was still inappropriate. The commenter believes fans will likely excuse it as a simple misunderstanding, but they don’t find that believable.
Someone on Reddit commented that a previous remark about yodeling is likely to cause a backlash for the person who said it, and they found the situation amusing.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following the online conversation, and it’s clear many people were upset by Sabrina’s comments. I saw a lot of reactions on X, and one person really hit the nail on the head – they pointed out that even after it was explained that yodeling is a significant part of someone’s culture, Sabrina continued to dismiss it, which really spoke volumes about her perspective.
‘Did Sabrina Carpenter just call that girl’s culture weird and creepy?’ another fan chimed in.
However, many people quickly came to the singer’s defense. One person pointed out, ‘It was obvious she couldn’t hear the girl – she was way up on stage, after all.’
At the beginning of her performance, Carpenter appeared thrilled to be headlining what many consider the world’s most famous and impactful music festival.
Speaking to the crowd at the festival, she expressed her excitement about headlining Coachella. She admitted she was surprised, but quickly added with a smile that it felt good to say she always knew she could!
Coachella, the famous music and arts festival, will return to Indio, California in 2026 for two weekends of performances.
Alongside Carpenter, Justin Bieber and Karol G will also be the main performers at the eagerly awaited event.
The lineup includes a diverse group of artists from many different genres and eras, featuring performers like Anyma, Young Thug, Turnstile, David Byrne, FKA twigs, Addison Rae, and Ethel Cain.
The festival lineup also included established artists like Iggy Pop, Moby, and Devo. Radiohead’s appearance was particularly intriguing, billed as a special premiere of their ‘Kid A Mnesia’ project under the name ‘The Bunker Debut’.
The xx and The Strokes are both making a comeback to the festival.
This performance is a first for Justin Bieber at the festival, even though he’s previously made unannounced appearances during sets by artists like Ariana Grande, Daniel Caesar, Chance the Rapper, Tems, and Wizkid. It’s a significant moment in his career.
Justin Bieber last performed live at the 2026 Grammys on February 1st. Before that, he held a private concert at the Roxy Theatre on March 29th.
The singer, known for his hit song ‘Baby’, hasn’t toured extensively since he had to cancel his 49-city ‘Justice World Tour’ due to Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a condition that caused him health problems.
The Grammy-winning artist received over $10 million to perform at the Southern California festival, making them the highest-paid performer in the festival’s history, exceeding the earnings of stars like Beyoncé and Lady Gaga.
According to a source at Rolling Stone, Justin Bieber negotiated his Coachella performance fee himself, directly with Goldenvoice, and didn’t use an agent to handle the deal.
A source close to the musician – who has a one-year-old son, Jack, with his wife, model Hailey Bieber – said this was a remarkable and independent achievement for a main performer.
With a headlining performance at Coachella and the popularity of his recent work, it’s obvious Justin is entering a really promising chapter in his career, where he’s taking complete control.
I was absolutely thrilled when I heard Phoebe Carpenter would be back at Coachella! I remember seeing her perform in 2024 – it was amazing, and so sweet to see Barry Keoghan supporting her from the VIP area. But she recently told Perfect magazine that this time, she’s planning something even bigger – she says it’s going to be the most ambitious show of her career, and honestly, I can’t wait!
Karol G is finally back on the Coachella stage. She performed at the festival in 2022, but this time she’ll be showcasing her latest album, Tropicoqueta, which came out in June. This marks her first major performance since its release.
The milestone makes her the first Latina artist to lead the iconic Coachella stage.
Prices for weekend passes at this year’s event ran from $549 to $1,299.
The headliners for last year’s Coachella were Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator, and Doja Cat.
