How that Stranger Things star’s cameo came about in new Malcolm in the Middle reboot

Fans were surprised to see a star from Stranger Things make a cameo on the revived sitcom Malcolm in the Middle. The story of how that appearance happened is full of excitement – and a little bit of colorful language!

If you’ve been enjoying the first four episodes of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair on Disney+ or Hulu, you may have been surprised to see Finn Wolfhard show up in the last episode.

Finn Wolfhard, known for his role as Mike Wheeler in the Netflix series Stranger Things, was cast very late in the process. Linwood Boomer, the creator and showrunner of Malcolm in the Middle, recently shared the story in an interview with Deadline.

Boomer explained that Finn Wolfhard’s agent reached out to ask if he could visit the set. They immediately agreed, and since they knew he was a huge fan of the show, they offered him a role in a part that hadn’t been filled yet.

Even though it was a minor role, the actor was thrilled to be involved in the limited series. Boomer remembered his agent enthusiastically agreeing, saying, “Absolutely, he’s in!” They were equally excited, responding, “Fantastic, we’d love to have him!”

Wolfhard played the event planner Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) hired for a significant event in the show Life’s Still Unfair. Tracy Katsky, the show’s executive producer and Boomer’s wife, described him as being incredibly pleasant and professional to work with.

She described him as incredibly talented and charming, and really enjoyable to watch perform comedy. She fondly remembered a moment with Lois, played by Jane Kaczmarek, where he was adorably flustered and kept forgetting his lines – he seemed completely overwhelmed, and it was really sweet.

Jane Kaczmarek, who played Lois on Malcolm in the Middle, joked that she needed a dedicated phone line because of Finn Wolfhard’s admiration for her character. Bryan Cranston, who played Hal, praised Wolfhard as a “great actor.”

Critics and viewers seem to be enjoying “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair.” Currently, 78% of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes give the show a positive rating, based on 36 reviews.

Finn Wolfhard has finished his work on Stranger Things now that the show has wrapped up after five seasons. However, fans can still enjoy more of the story with an animated spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, which will be released later this month.
