Laure Provost’s Latest Show is a Leap Into the Quantum Realm

Over the past hundred years since the advent of quantum physics, its impact on our understanding of the world has been profound and lasting. From Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment in 1935 to Microsoft’s recent discovery of a new state of matter in 2025, it is clear that we are witnessing a revolutionary change in our planetary perspective.

At Kraftwerk Berlin, Laure Prouvost – the Turner Prize winner – delves into the intricate mysteries of quantum phenomena in her latest exhibition titled “WE FELT A STAR DYING“. This exhibition spans across a massive 37,600 square feet within the old power station. Inspired by two years of research using a quantum computer, Prouvost transforms cosmic queries, theories, and concepts into an immersive audiovisual experience enriched with scents and tactile sculptures that respond to quantum signals.

Collaborating with philosopher Tobias Rees and scientist Hartmut Neven, the French artist seeks to combine a whimsical outlook with the unconventional reasoning of quantum physics to explore a fresh area of investigation: “What if we could perceive reality through a quantum lens?” Essentially, they are asking what it signifies to coexist in an intricate web of space and conditions.

In a nutshell, Rees argues that quantum processes defy traditional categorizations such as natural vs technical, living vs non-living, human vs machine, or being vs thing. He suggests that quantum mechanics liberates us from our conventional understanding of the world. Laure Prouvost’s work, according to him, is remarkable because it seizes and expresses the poetic potential of this liberation, making it a tangible experience for us.

As a gamer commissioned by the LAS Art Foundation, I’m thrilled to be part of the unveiling of Sensing Quantum – a groundbreaking initiative. This program fosters creative partnerships among artists, scientists, and thought leaders, inviting us all to explore the fascinating realm of quantum computing as a cosmic force.

WE FELT A STAR DYING is now on view in Berlin through May 4, 2025.
