Netflix reveals hidden detail of “impossible” Adolescence scene after viewer confusion

Netflix shares insights on how they pulled off the seemingly unattainable scene at the conclusion of episode two in their upcoming single-part series, ‘Adolescence‘.

Developed jointly by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, this four-part series narrates the story of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (portrayed by newcomer Owen Cooper), who finds himself under suspicion for the tragic death of a classmate at his school.

Since its debut on Thursday (March 13), the show has gained immense popularity, receiving acclaim not only from professional critics but also from viewers, for its bold portrayal of gender-based violence.

To be honest, I was initially thrown off by the smooth transition at the close of episode two, where the camera effortlessly moved from the school to the crime scene in one continuous shot. This unique cinematography style left me momentarily puzzled about how we got there.

In response to someone stating the scene in X as “unbelievable,” Netflix posted a backstage video demonstrating how that particular shot was captured, revealing that the camera had been mounted on a drone.

As a streamer, I tagged along behind a student, carrying the camera and capturing her journey on a wide shot, all the way to the traffic lights, marking the end of her school day.

First, they set up a camera on a drone prior to someone crossing the road. The drone then flew for about 0.3 miles over the scene to where the crime took place, landing in the hands of a camera operator and their team who skillfully received it. This transitioned into a close-up shot of Stephen Graham.

In addition to their queries, viewers were curious about a particular moment in the episode where it appears that the camera goes right through a window while DI Luke Bascombe (Ashley Walters from Top Boy) pursues one of Jamie’s friends through the school.

Netflix clarified that the scene didn’t contain an actual window; instead, they used visual effects to create and replace it.

In the classroom initially, one of the cameramen was positioned. Once Ryan leaped out of the window, another operator – situated on the opposite side and in a crouched position – grabbed the camera and pursued the chase further.
