Cyndi Lauper, 71, Reveals Shocking Past That Inspired Iconic Feminist Anthem!
Cyndi Lauper is headed to Australia for the next leg of her farewell tour.
Before embarking on her journey to Australia, the renowned American pop artist discussed her most popular song, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” during an interview on The Project.
In her own words, the 71-year-old artist shared that the song, which was originally sung by Robert Hazard, was handed to her for the purpose of transforming it into a powerful statement for women. Given her strong feminist background, she confidently took on the task.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to highlight my observation about Cyndi Lauper during her show performance. She astonished everyone by seeming decades younger than her actual age. Notably, she rewrote the lyrics from their original context, turning the narrative on its head, empowering girls to take the lead and assert their dominance.
She mentioned that they repeatedly suggested she create a powerful song for women, to which she responded, “Alright, I could definitely do that, and it sounds like a great idea.
However, it seems they underestimated our interaction as I had participated in the 1969 women’s demonstration and had destroyed my training bra during that event. That’s a part of history you might be familiar with.
‘Together with my friend, we accidentally burned her rollers and mine was a training bra. Whenever people jokingly asked me if I was some sort of bra burner, I would chuckle and reply, “Funnily enough, yes, my training bra did get burned at the time.”‘
‘The song came together, and, you know, the rest is herstory I guess.’
Cindy begins the Australian segment of her Girls Just Want to Have Fun Farewell Tour in Melbourne on April 2nd.
Subsequently, she travels to Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, and Adelaide, culminating her journey in Perth on April 12.
After that, she goes to Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, and Adelaide, wrapping up in Perth by April 12.
Lastly, if you prefer a more conversational tone:
Next, she’s off to Brisbane, then Newcastle, Sydney, and Adelaide, before touching down in Perth on April 12.
After fans vigorously rallied to shield the renowned singer, a video from their January performance that garnered unwanted attention spread widely online.
Recently, an account I follow posted a video from the ’80s pop-rock sensation herself, as she took center stage on her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour – marking a significant return after a decade away.
In the video, the artist (who experienced challenging audio issues during her performance at Glastonbury in June of last year) was seen sporting teal hair and a shiny silver ensemble. She was visibly excited as she danced energetically while performing her 1985 hit “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough.
The caption of the post said, “What’s going on with Cyndi Lauper?”, and someone else replied, “She’s 71 years old now. It’s time to stop. You’re making a scene that isn’t becoming.

However, many fans took to Cyndi’s defense.
Music critic and online influencer Anthony Fantano penned: ‘She consistently produced numerous chart-toppers, released multiple albums throughout her career, experienced growth, and continues to entertain fans for several decades. Can you maintain such an enduring career? Is being offensive on social media destined for the same level of longevity?’
Regarding your query about the singer, a fan replied: ‘Just like it will happen to you, aging is what has occurred with the singer.’
‘Dude, she’s 71 years old. I hope I’m hopping around like that at 71,’ yet another chimed in.
She’s 71 years old? While it might be surprising if you’re expecting her to appear and sound exactly as she did at 32, let me tell you, she looks fantastic, and her voice is quite impressive too.
Many supporters came forward in defense of Cyndi, condemning the sexism and age discrimination she faced.
“She has enjoyed significant success throughout her professional journey, and she truly cherishes her work. It seems unfortunate that everyone often tends to focus on the negative rather than appreciating people’s achievements.” (Informal: “Her career has been fantastic, and she adores what she does. Why can’t y’all be more positive instead of constantly bringing others down?”)
She has every right to age gracefully. Unfortunately, the dismal economy prevents her from retiring. Likewise, I’ve gained a few extra pounds and years since I last saw her perform in the 80s. Yet, even elderly women can dance!

As a die-hard fan, let me clarify: It appears that Minnie Castevet is belting out a Rod Stewart number in karaoke – but don’t be fooled, it’s Cyndi Lauper! Her illustrious career and undeniable talent demand a more respectful response than mere misogyny or ageism.
Could you please be patient? At the impressive age of 71, Cyndi continues to move superbly and sing with vigor. It requires tremendous bravery to persevere through life, especially as we grow older, which isn’t always easy. Cyndi is truly a legend! I adore her!!
It’s called aging, but I wouldn’t pay to watch her perform at this stage, yet I must commend her for her efforts. She isn’t just living in a nursing home; she’s actively participating in life. The saying goes, ‘An object in motion stays in motion.’ Performing keeps her mind sharp and alert. Let’s not criticize her for staying active.
As a fervent admirer, let me rephrase the statement in a personal and engaging manner: “She’s grown older, but she’s holding up quite well if I may say so myself. In fact, she shares the same age as my mother. My mother, alas, doesn’t grace any stages with her dance or voice anymore. Age catches us all, it seems. So, could you enlighten me on what exactly is your point here?
‘She’s 71 and doing what she loves. Try not being judgemental for once. She isn’t bothering you.’
Cyndi’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour began in Montreal, Canada, on October 18, 2024.
The popular singer openly shared her wish to organize a farewell concert series, as long as she’s fit and well, so she can adequately express gratitude to her fans for their unwavering support.
The singer Lauper, who boasts a staggering 25.7 million monthly listeners on Spotify, has managed to sell more than 50 million records worldwide throughout her four-decade long career. She holds the prestigious title of having Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits such as Time After Time, She Bop, and True Colors.
The superstar has released eleven studio albums.
Back in 2013, I had the immense honor of making history by being the first woman to secure the Tony Award for Best Original Score, all on my own, for the extraordinary Broadway production known as Kinky Boots.
She has a 28-year-old son named Declyn ‘Dex’ Lauper, who she shares with her husband, the Law & Order actor David Thornton, whom she has been married to since 1991.
