The Electric State is Netflix’s most-watched movie this week – but it’s not all good news
This week, “The Electric State” has been Netflix’s most popular film – unfortunately, that seems to be the only positive aspect.
The science fiction film featuring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt premiered on the streaming platform last Friday and has enjoyed a good deal of viewership, amassing more than 25 million views, securing its place at the peak of the service’s Top 10 movies.
Nevertheless, the viewership is relatively low in comparison to other Netflix blockbusters. It trails significantly behind the debuts of movies like Red Notice (75 million), The Adam Project (52.3 million), and even Damsel by Brown (35 million).
It seems likely that if The Electric State, with its substantial budget of $320 million, doesn’t manage to attract a large audience, it might not make it into the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time.
The movie directed by the Russo brothers isn’t receiving rave reviews from critics, as it holds a modest 15% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the lowest critical acclaim for actress Brown in her career to date.
In a review awarded two stars, Digital Spy commented that “The Electric State” falls into a common category of Netflix productions: they’re engaging enough to keep viewers tuned in, yet seldom outstanding enough to leave a lasting impression.
The film is adapted from an illustrated novel penned by Simon Stålenhag, and it unfolds in an alternative 1994 post-war scenario between humans and robots. It follows the protagonist Michelle, portrayed by Brown, as she embarks on a journey to locate her supposedly deceased brother.
As I team up with Brown and Pratt on this new adventure, I find myself sharing the screen with some incredible talent. Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, Giancarlo Esposito, Woody Norman, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, and Alan Tudyk – these are the faces I’m proud to be acting alongside in this movie.
The Electric State is streaming now on Netflix.
