Beyond Paradise’s Kris Marshall weighs in on the return of a fan-hated character
Beyond Paradise‘s Kris Marshall has responded to Archie’s return in the third season.
In the first season of the “Death in Paradise” spin-off, Martha’s former fiancé, portrayed by Jamie Bamber, became less popular among viewers when he tried to regain Martha’s affections during a challenging time in her relationship with Humphrey, which didn’t sit well with many viewers.
In a private chat with Digital Spy, Marshall hinted that Humphrey might not show much concern about Archie’s arrival in the upcoming season.
He found it rather unusual if Archie, who’s been living in Shipton Abbott for quite some time and operates a business there, were to disappear without a trace, as Humphrey is the newcomer.
It seems like Humphrey isn’t too fussed. I believe he’s quite content in his relationship with Martha.
It seems to me that they are getting along well, and Humphrey appears to be more puzzled rather than intimidated by Archie.
He added: “I don’t believe he ever truly felt endangered. Perhaps a little in the initial encounter, but I suspect he operates on a slightly higher level. Archie is present, interacting, and naturally radiating his charisma. We shall observe how things unfold.
In an individual, exclusive chat with Digital Spy, Bamber shared that he didn’t anticipate coming back to the series.
Initially, Archie served as a source of conflict within the main relationship, acting as something annoying or troublesome, according to him. However, he was absent during the second season, which came as an unexpected surprise to him.
It came as quite a shock when Tim Key, the executive producer, called me and proposed, “How about we grab coffee? I’ve got this concept I’d like to share, and I think you might find it intriguing.” He shared his idea, and I found myself captivated by it.
The star expressed joy at returning, even though his character had been met with unfavorable reactions.
Regarding viewer responses towards him during season one, Bamber commented: “There seems to be a lot of dislike towards the show from viewers, but I always respond with, ‘Archie is essentially a good character. He’s merely attempting to carve out his own path in life. He deeply cares for this woman and any sensible man would express himself honestly and try to win her over.’ And that’s exactly what Archie did initially.
“Let’s see what he gets up to this time.”
Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
