Today, most major movies are available on streaming services. Platforms like Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Peacock, and Paramount+ are now the primary way many people watch films.
As a huge movie buff, I’m starting to feel the pinch of all these streaming services constantly raising their prices. Netflix and Prime Video just hit us with increases, and I’m bracing for others to follow suit. That’s why Tubi is such a breath of fresh air – it’s genuinely different and a fantastic option when your wallet’s feeling a little light.
Tubi often gets overlooked because it’s not as well-known as other streaming services, and it doesn’t require a subscription. However, that’s actually its biggest strength – it’s completely free! You will see ads, but for many, a few commercials are a small price to pay for access to a huge selection of movies and shows without any subscription fees.
Tubi is well-known for its collection of low-budget and independent films, but it also offers a surprising number of well-regarded movies. You can find classic horror films, Oscar winners, critically acclaimed international titles, and even films considered to be among the greatest of all time.
Scream (1996)
Slasher movies were hugely popular in the late 70s and 80s, but their popularity declined in the 90s. However, Wes Craven’s Scream revitalized the genre. The film was both a box office and critical success, and cleverly played with and satirized common slasher movie clichés.
Often considered one of the greatest horror films ever made, Scream launched a hugely successful franchise that continues today. Though the sequels are generally well-received, most fans agree the 1996 original is the strongest, making it a standout choice for Tubi’s best movies.
Superbad (2007)
Few comedy films are as iconic and well-loved as Superbad, particularly for its focus on teenage characters. The movie features a fantastic cast, including stars like Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Emma Stone, Seth Rogen, and Bill Hader.
Superbad is famously outrageous, and that’s a big part of what makes it so funny. While it’s often silly and exaggerated, the movie’s genuine heart and the strong friendship between the main characters are what really make it work. It’s packed with hilarious, unforgettable lines and scenes that have become comedy classics.
Poor Things (2023)
Looking at Emma Stone’s career, from her early role in Superbad to her recent success in Poor Things really highlights her growth as an actress. Superbad was one of her first films, a small supporting part, but Poor Things won her her second Academy Award for Best Actress, solidifying her status as a truly exceptional performer.
Poor Things is a delightfully bizarre and recent film. It’s a fresh spin on the Frankenstein story, starring Emma Stone as Bella Baxter, a woman revived with the brain of a baby. This unusual premise perfectly sets the stage for the wonderfully strange style of director Yorgos Lanthimos.
Goodfellas (1990)
Many people consider The Godfather the best movie of all time, but Goodfellas has a strong claim to the title of greatest mafia film, and for good reason. This Martin Scorsese classic delivers everything fans expect from the genre.
The cast of Goodfellas, including Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Lorraine Bracco, all give outstanding performances in this film about the life of mob associate Henry Hill. Critics loved the movie, as shown by its six Academy Award nominations and a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Slasher films were incredibly popular in the late 1970s, and a major reason for that success was The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The film gained a lot of attention because it was advertised as being based on a true story – though it was only loosely inspired by real events – which drew large crowds to theaters.
One of the things that makes The Texas Chain Saw Massacre so effective is how deliberately unpleasant and gritty it is. The violence, especially Leatherface’s attacks, feels disturbingly realistic and leaves you with a genuinely unsettling feeling. This contributes to its status as a landmark slasher film.
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966)
Clint Eastwood is arguably the most iconic actor in Hollywood history. He’s achieved incredible success as both a performer and a director. While choosing his best film is tough, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is consistently considered a top contender.
This classic spaghetti western, the second in the Dollars Trilogy, features Clint Eastwood as a mysterious bounty hunter simply known as The Man With No Name. Many consider it the best western ever made, and it’s a must-see for fans of Eastwood or the genre in general.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
World War II has been depicted in countless movies, but few have captured the experience as powerfully as Saving Private Ryan. Steven Spielberg’s direction was ideal for this story of a team of soldiers sent on a dangerous mission to find and rescue James Francis Ryan during the war.
Spielberg brilliantly captured the immense scale of World War II, immersing viewers right into the heart of the battle. This spectacular approach made the film one of the most unforgettable of the 1990s, further cementing the reputations of both Spielberg and Tom Hanks.
Seven Samurai (1954)
Akira Kurosawa is famous for making incredible films, and many consider Seven Samurai to be his masterpiece. This over three-hour-long movie tells the story of farmers who hire seven samurai to protect their harvest from bandits.
Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai is incredibly influential, inspiring countless films like The Magnificent Seven over the years. Many consider it a cinematic masterpiece, despite not winning the major awards it was up for, such as the Oscars and BAFTAs.
Rain Man (1988)
Before becoming a huge action star, Tom Cruise acted in comedies and dramas, showing his talent in films like Rain Man. While he did a good job in that movie, Dustin Hoffman’s performance was truly outstanding – he even won an Oscar for Best Actor.
Dustin Hoffman brilliantly portrays Raymond, the autistic brother of Tom Cruise’s character, Charlie. Though they start off awkward with each other, their connection is genuinely touching and makes the movie incredibly memorable. The film was a major success, earning Hoffman an Academy Award for Best Actor and also winning Best Picture.
Ghost In The Shell (1995)
Ghost in the Shell is a well-known franchise with multiple sequels, an updated version, and even a live-action movie. However, the original film remains highly regarded and is considered one of the most important and best animated movies of all time.
Though visually impressive for its time, Ghost in the Shell truly shines because of its compelling characters, well-written story, fantastic music, and distinctive cyberpunk aesthetic. It was a major award winner – receiving more nominations than any other Japanese film at the Annie Awards – and remains a captivating watch even after thirty years.
